YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

[ Edited ]

Hi there,

I've been having issues recently trying to watch any YouTube videos over the mobile network ,despite having a full/strong signal. I'm able to watch videos absolutely fine and in stunning HD over the wireless network, but as for mobile data, the video just refuses to play, showing the "Connection to server lost" message almost immediately.

I had been crawling all over forums trying to fix the issue, thinking it was a problem with my APN settings or something, but it turns out to be something else.

What I did was turn on "Android Debugging" on my phone, installed the Android SDK on my laptop and then run the following command:

./adb logcat radio

That'll give me all network activity from my device. I found this was being returned:

Screen Shot 2012-10-11 at 18.15.42.png

As you can see, there is an error being reported by MediaPlayer from what appears to be a HTTP error 500 on the data source, which sounds like YouTube is broken, right? Just to find out, I copied the URL highlighted in that screenshot and pasted it into my browser:

Screen Shot 2012-10-11 at 18.15.50.png

As you can see, the URL loads and Quicktime tries to load, which suggests that the URL is working absolutely fine.

To see if this was Vodafone related, I tethered my phone and connected my laptop to it, so I could use it's internet connection. I also unplugged my laptop from it's ethernet port to prevent any mixed results. The only network being used is now Vodafone's though my phone. This is what happened when I visited that URL again in my browser:

Screen Shot 2012-10-11 at 18.16.34.png

Yup, I'm not going crazy.. That's an error 500, visiting that URL through Vodafone's own UK network.

Could someone at Vodafone take a look at this and get back to me? I've been waiting 2 months for the issue to fix itself before posting this, it's been driving me crazy!

I've also attached the logcat from when I visited YouTube on my phone for those interested:

EDIT: I should probably clarify, all other websites appear to be working absolutely fine on the device (not sure about streaming as I only use YouTube for that). Other websites also worked on my laptop when I tethered it to my phone's internet connection.

Thanks for your help, I can answer any technical questions if you need to!

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

Kudos just for the full debugging and analysis that you have gone to.

I am at work just now so only have a data connection available. I sent myself the URL and it too gives me the HTTP 500 error code. Though that could be because the URL was corrupted somehow (due to truncation in the post).

Either way I get the same error, though I am unable to test using a WiFi connection.

I tried to extract out the YouTube video from the redirector link but was unable to and the YouTube app doesn't search so well using the id field.

What were the steps used to locate this YouTube video - I can at least try and repro them for you ...

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

Hi b0yce,

Thanks for the kudos! I had to have concrete evidence before coming on here. I can't handle the "hard reset", "turned it on and off again" post potential that would have appeared if I came with anything less. It gets nothing done.

Unfortunately, that link now shows as a 403 forbidden on my internet connection here now. It could be that the link expired, as it looks pretty unique to me. I will post a new link when I test this again later today to test this, but we'll have to be quick!

You're right about the video, I couldn't find the YouTube video ID anywhere.. I basically selected any old video in the app and watched the log for that URL. They all react the same way in this issue with an error 500 on Vodafone's mobile network.

Thanks,

Oli

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

Hang on here anyone thought of looking at YouTube, on another device I have been looking into why it's lagging and found the app was the issue .
When using the app on a mobile network it uses a return path command thatt lets the app know if your on a mobile network or WiFi now on some device's YouTube have had issues
I have check it this morning and it's fine but you will find that as this is a third party app it does boil at first down to YouTube to take a look, if they say it's a network problems then they will notify Vodafone
Now one thing to check is it could be a area issues have you Had any other issues with any other apps ?

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

Hi Northern-dj,

I'm afraid this is not the case. The videos stopped working on their own, this wasn't a result of the YouTube app updating or anything like that because I have set my phone to manually update. To eliminate that being a factor anyway, I have performed a hard reset on my phone and it still has the issues. I have also tested my sim card in a friend's unlocked S3 with the same issue.

Secondly, the YouTune app wouldn't use a return path command. There's an API called ConnectivityManager in the Android SDK which tells you what networks are available and connected, as I use it when I develop Android apps. It's the most commonly used networking feature in the API. In addition to this, why would the same URL work and stream video on my laptop's wireless network but not via the tethered Vodafone network? To test that theory, I didn't even have the YouTube app open.

Lastly, it is not down to YouTube to report problems to Vodafone. They provide a fairly standard app that works on standard protocols. The issue here is that one of those protocols is not working via Vodafone's proxies.

Thanks,

Oli

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

Hi mrnorm

Personally this is something I haven't come across previously when only having difficulty accessing the one site with HTTP 500 server error. I've referred this to one of my colleagues who has a little more expertise in this area and when I have a response I'll be on to update the thread.

Thanks

Simon

Hi again, I just tried a random video over data connection using the You Tube app and it works fine for me.

Helpful info:

You Tube version (Menu -> Settings -> About): 4.1.23

GS3 Firmware CSC (Phone Keypad -> *#1234#): I9300VFGBLG3

APN Settings: wap.vodafone.co.uk - I am a Monthly contract customer

Currently here at work I am connected at H+ speeds, though that should make zero difference as far as streaming is concerned.

Can't think of anything else that could help, but if you want me to try something - please let me know!

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

Hi b0yce,

Thanks very much for the update! I can confirm my info is the same. I did have the APN 'internet' as my default, but chancing it to the wap.vodafone.co.uk one didn't make a difference for me.

Could this be a local issue?

Thanks,

Oli

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

It could well be a local issue, though I couldn't think why some services wouldn't be allowed in some areas as others. You have stated you have a HSDPA+ (H+) connection and so I would imagine all services would be available. This should even be the case for the 3G network.

Do Vodafone operate throttling/lack of certain services in certain areas - well this could indeed point to that !

FWIW - I am in Central London currently and have also used You Tube where I live in Kent without issue.

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

Possibly.. It's the only thing I can think of at this stage! I mean, it happens on my laptop when I visit the URLs, too. I know Vodafone operate proxy servers, as I've had a few occasions in the past where all requests were returning 403 (forbidden) for all sites I was trying to get on.

Hi sleeveroller,

Glad I'm not the only one with this! What is the signal like when this happens? Can you visit sites/use other online apps?

Despite chasing them on Twitter and putting a ticket into their online helpdesk, I've predictably heard nothing back from them.

Doesn't matter what kind of signal I have at the time. I can use everything else without issue. It's been like this for months but as I rarely use youtube when I'm out and about I haven't bothered reporting it until now.

The workaround I've found sometimes works is to browse the youtube website with the Dolphin Browser with the user agent set to Desktop.

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

Nice work debugging, I am not too sure if this is relating to youtube, I did get that error the other day too I was surfing the net when suddenly it would not connect.I think I was watching a Youtube video on that page too, so it's a tricky one because even when I am able to get full signal H my apps will not connect or the internet browser will say that there is no network conneciton available...The H does not show any up/down activity when this happens. Check out the screenshot I took the other day when I was trying to use a halo reach app

Re: YouTube not working over 3G/HSDPA+

Hi Damian86,

Can you confirm if this happens constantly or intermittently for me, or if it was a short-lived case? You only specifically mention "the other day" so it's hard to get a picture of the issue.

Also, did this only affect the device with the signal on "H", or was 3G similarly affected?

If it happens intermittently, is there any pattern, such as time, application, location or signal type?

Finally, just so we can rule things out, if it's a regular issue have you only tried it in one general area, such as within a mile or so of your house? If so, can you confirm the postcode so we can take a quick look at the local masts?

Dave
