my first 10.1 let me lock it while using pattern locking, like all android.
however, this needed to be exchanged due to a screen fault and this one does not lock. i set up the pattern and switch it on....but no joy. same with PIN
cant get to a Voda shop........
ive googled but cant find help

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 can be locked by pattern, PIN or password, and this is set up via the security section in settings.
If these functions fail to help then this must be down to a faulty device, or possibly corrupt firmware. As the device is new, it may be worth actioning a factory reset, then retrying:
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Select Privacy.
3. Choose Factory data reset.
There may also be a firmware update available that may resolve this.
