Sony Ericsson Xperia 1 - Issue's Again

Hi Jenny,

I took the X1 into my local vodafone shop and was told that they could send it away but there is a problem with the X1 and most likely will be sent back not fix or fix and will go back to being the same so they basically told me its a rubbish phone. And just said to wait it out till my contract is due to up grade which is not till May :( (

That is pretty much what I have been told as well

is this not a bit ridiculous? i've had my X-1 back to the shop about 8 times now with the same problem (it's still there just now, next week it will have been a month since i was able to use it), vodafone staff are actively discouraging users from sending it off for repair, stating it will just break again or not come back fixed and we're still not being offered a replacement/refund?

is this not covered by the sales of goods act? do electrical goods not have to be fit for purpose? and vodafone staff are stating that it isn't. seems like it should be, but i'm not a lawyer (thank god. :) ).
vodafone peeps, your thoughts?

VF and SE might not want to admit it for obvious reasons - but there 100% is a common fault with both the keyboard and reception on these phones - I have 3 friends who have all now moved onto android phones due to these issues even tho they were otherwise very happy with the X1.

Fortunatly on mine firmly but gently running my nails left<>right along the space between each row of keys on the keyboard fixes the odd time when the space button stops responding and N button results in multiple entries etc. for a couple of months and if/when it comes back so far its been successful in fixing it.

Reception is a bit of a pain still but generally in places where I have a problem using it in landscape mode with the keyboard open just about gets enough signal - one bar of HSPA on VF gets me a good 600+KBit/s.

Instead of messing around with the X2, etc. SE should have gone back and made a refresh of the X1 - fixing the minor keyboard issues, redesigning the main antenna block, fixing the optical joystick and putting a decent camera on it would perfect an otherwise very very good phone IMO.

I can't really fault VF's handling of the issues - as they can't really admit a problem unless SE take ownership of the issue... they've been responsive on the support front and been very willing to replace or repair the phone - but as I know that any replacement is as likely to have a worse version of the same issue as it is to fix it I'm sticking with mine as its currently liveable with.

Hi everyone,

Whilst we completely understand your frustration here, there isn’t anything more we can suggest other than either sending your phone off to be repaired, or alternatively you can contact the manufacturer directly.

Many thanks,

Same here, i have to admit that every CS rep that I have spoken too has been most helpful, to the point today they they have authorised an early upgrade for me, now i just need to decide what hand set I want.

I havent had to scream/shout/rant at anyone, i have just discussed in a calm manner the issues that I have been having and what I have been advised by various stores.

wow, us Brits really do hate to cause a fuss, don't we? :)

mrsp24- fair enough, that's your call. but since mine's been unusable i've not had that luxury. it's been back 8 times now (i think). the 4th or 5th time it went back it wasn't really that bad, i wish i'd just stuck with that one.
personally i can and do fault vodafone on this. these are known problems with the device that staff have admitted to. i've followed their "just send it in for repair" line many, many times now. this last time i've been without the device for almost a month now. in the end i ended up forking out 450 quid to replace the device as i've never got it in a working state. i'm pretty sure this is covered by the sales of goods act, so i think that's what's going to be my next step.

ianW- do you often have to scream and shout at CS reps? :) as for the early upgrade, you realise that's a sales trick, right? by "early upgrading" you're signing on for another 12/18/24 months. they do it all the time. when i got my X-1 the guy saw my girlfriend looking at a phone and offered to sign her up to a new contract so she could get it about 3 and a half months before her contract ended. i imagine if you asked for an "early upgrade" right after you'd just signed a new contract they'd jump at the prospect.

Nope i dont ever have to scream/shout as having been on the end of the phone a long time ago now, I know what it gets you...not a lot.

as for the early upgrade scam, not in this case they have taken 3 months off my contract as a gesture of good will. So even if I take another 18 month contract now for example, even with the 3 months left to run on mine would mean that it would only be 33 months and not 36 months or I can stick it out for 3 months and then I wouldn't be tied in to any contract.

they've still got you as a customer for another 15 months though, no?

see, i was stupid enough to sign a 24 month contract. my phone first started having issues after about 3 months. it was about 12 months and 7 or 8 returns before i gave up and bought a new phone. honestly i'd be happy if they just released me from my contract at this point as i feel utterly fiddled. :(
i'll never sign another 24 month contract with anyone, that's for sure. even 18 seems like too much hassle to be worth it just now.

Nope they have me as a contracted customer for another 3 months max, unless I can find a phone that I want, in which case then yes as you said a new 18 month contract gets tagged onto the end of my current contract.

I am not personally a fan of 24 month contracts either, and being honest it is the only thing I miss from my days on Orange, where I had a 12 month contract and had a phone upgrade every 9 months!

sorry if i'm being slow, but i'm interested in this as i'm keen to get away from vodafone as soon as possible!

so they've offered to reduce your contract by 3 months, even if you don't sign up for a new contract? or only if you do?

Well checking My Account online my contract now shows an End Date 3 months earlier that it did earlier today, I think that I may have been lucky with who i spoke too? I dont know, however I am more than happy with the outcome, and being honest I think that the way that Vodafone have dealt with me over the last year, has been excellent, so I had no plans to move to another network upon renewal time anyway, however my dealings with the customer support team, without having to escalate to the eForum team have been excellent.

Try having a chat with them, you might be surprised at what they might offer, I know that I was!
