X10 getting Android 2.3?

Ok, i have read online that sony are going to release 2.3 for the X10 in August.

I understand that no-one can/will give me the exact date or even an estimate for when this will be releaased onto Vodafone handsets;

but would someone be able to confirm that it is actually going happen at all?

http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2011/03/25/update-on-xperia%E2%84%A2-x10/

it shouldn't make any difference what provider you are with regarding the release.

Re: X10 getting Android 2.3?

There have been a few dates thrown around - 2nd August has been mentioned as the start date but if it is released in the same way as the 2.1 update, it will be done in stages using "kit" numbers - this is the SI reference on the sticker in the battery compartment (in a "xxxx - xxxx" format), so it could be anyones guess as to when everyone will have access to it.

The announcements still talk about the likelyhood that the update will only be available for generic phones, and my understanding (from posting on here earlier this year) is that if there is no provider boot screen appearing when the phone starts up, it is generic, regardless of what is printed on the outside of the phone.

I think SE have confirmed that it's not possible to officially down grade once you've upgraded either, so unless you want to root/flash your phone it's a one way trip.

As always, VF (and other providers) may want to add their software to the update before they release it to their customers, but the generic comments might mean this isn't the case this time round.   If you ask VF they'll direct you to a standard firmware update section that basically tells you nothing, and once you've pointed this out to VF, they usually come clean and tell you they don't know anything.  I'd much prefer them to do this first time round and dave us all the hassle!

Once it does start to roll out, have a look at the official Sony Ericsson product blog at ttp://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2011/07/, as this gets a lot of use, or try www.xperia10.net as they seem to be pretty on the ball.

Re: X10 getting Android 2.3?

That's what I've been told - mine's the same, no branding on the phone itself, no VF start up screen but the VF bloatware comes as part of the package.  You can't get rid of this permanently unless you start rooting and flashing your phone I don't think - there was mention of an app to download that would do this but not sure.

Only a week or so until the official "release" so no doubt there will be some sort of announcement to clarify who, what and when.  Interestingly, I think I read somewhere that the new release would delete everything from your phone (as with the other updates) so you need to back up all your contacts and apps etc. but it also said that the stock back and restore function would no longer be available so not to use this when you do the back up.

It makes me wonder if a need for more RAM to operate 2.3 successfully has mean't that some of the standard apps and functions will have to be pared back - the camera functions were thought to be getting chopped but public demand has saved these in some form.  As part of this RAM saving exercise, wouldn't it be nice if VF couldn't tag on their software anymore - not sure if this is somehow tied in to the generic issue?  I'm sure some onemore techhy than me will be able to fill in the blanks on this!!!

Re: X10 getting Android 2.3?

The wife's X10 that has no VF splash but all the silly apps has no update available,

Shame as it's slow as nail's on 2.1, really needs the 2.3 update.

Come on VF release the update, generic will do :smileywink:

Re: X10 getting Android 2.3?

Word is its out there now, in the UK and lots of other places, but not all kits are responding just yet.  Should be out to all in the next couple of days hopefully - someone on 3 said they have it!

In preparation for the Android 2.3 upgrade for my Xperia X10i I have backed up , (using a 3rd party program - MyBackup), my phone - Contacts , photo's, media and Data etc. Also included in this backup is 'System Settings' - will I need to restore 'System Settings' when I have upgraded to 2.3 or will the new upgrade System Settings' be sufficient?

Once upgraded will the new Android 2.3 have a new Backup & Restore widget (as the old one will be deleted)?

Many thanks for any help.

Cheers, Norfolkman47

Re: X10 getting Android 2.3?

Can anybody post any news about the update? It has been released te past 28-29 July and we are still on 2.1 firmware.[I also have a generic handset] Sony Ericsson said that Generic handsets will be prioritized but I don't think anybody at Vodafone knows anything?

Can you please tell us when are you going to start releasing the update?

Thanks

@ Artful_Bodger:

Was your phone rooted or custom ROM'd at all or just an out of the box VF handset?

Re: X10 getting Android 2.3?

I tried last night and it said my phone was up to date.

If it helps at all my phone details:

Model: X10i
Baseband: 2.1.54
Build is: 2.1.A.0.435
Firmware: 2.1-update1
kernel: 2.6.29 SEMCUser@SEMCHost #1

So presumably anyone else with the same build etc will all get the update on the same day.
