Dead Sure Signal

amun
4: Newbie

My Sure Signal 3 appears to be dead - no lights, nothing.

As far as I can see it's about 2 years and 2 months old.

Is there anything that I can try?

Immediately remove from the power socket and do not attempt to get it working again as it has internally suffered a catastrophic failure and potentially dangerous.

You are entitled to a free replacement regardless of Warranty status as agreed with Trading Standards.

Please report this device failing to the BBC Watchdog programme via links below as currently being investigated for safety concerns.

Do not be told to purchase a new one even though out of warranty.

Thanks will be pursusing this - through the small claims courts if necessary. Off to try the other options first.

Just speken to Trading Standards - they say that they have no knowledge of this issue.

Call West Berkshire Trading Standards and ask to speak to Sean Murphy who is more than aware of the issue.

Consumer Direct is a forward facing call centre, so report the issue to them and it will be picked up in the background by TS system as call handlers don't see the full picture.

Consumer Direct will not know of the issue as they only log calls. Inform them that West Berkshire have a current investigation active.

This is why there is currently criticism of Trading Standards setup as there is no central office which I will suspect will change after tumble dryer issues, Vauxhall's recall and Glenfel after the enquiry.

BBC are already making noises that Trading Standards are not protecting the public from dangerous products as they are reliant on under funded Councils to fund with no obligation to provide this service.

Thanks for all your help.

Before I ring 191, I had another thought after reading through your other thread. If I get a replacement SureSignal, how do I know that the replacement is any safer? It seems to me that there's a design flaw, as some people seem to be on their second or third unit, so they could be inherently unsafe.

Apart from the risk of fire, if the device might take other kit with it when it dies, I'm strating to ask myself whether or not I should be looking for a replacement at all. Has anyone tried pursuing a refund instead?

You would need to make a formal written complaint and include the statement that you give them 14 days to refund you under Sale of Goods Act then if they refuse proceed with small claims action.

They would claim you have had 'some service' from the device in court where you would be paid a proportion of the original cost taken a reasonable amount of time of 6 years expected life.

Expect 50 to 60%  awarded plus costs. They may offer a 'good will' gesture after the letter.

Contact the CEO's office by external email and see what a high level complaint does.

I recently won a small claims action against a TV retailer as the 5 year old Panasonic TV I have cannot receive ITV HD on FreeSat due to a flaw in the tuner and received 25% of original purchase price plus costs back.

Your best option would be to get the free replacement then fleaBay it.

Thanks.

Clearly you've spent a lot of time on this, though. In your opinion, is it safe to accept a modern one, or are they all as bad?

Vodafone did tell Trading Standards that the device was uprated in 2015,  however a number of users have opened up recent replacements to find the electronics and layout is identical to the original 2013 versions.

This is currently being investigated as Vodafone told Trading Standards this to avoid further investigation and recall.

I'd suggest if you do use a replacement you plug it into an extension socket mounted vertically with a 1 or 2amp fuse fitted.

You can also consider changing the wall socket to a fused version although this means changing the socket itself.

This will ensure that any failure is quickly stopped and should not affect the supply circuit.
