Flashing Power and Solid Amber Signal light

Mark_B
4: Newbie

I've followed several of these threads to try and get my SS working but I've not been able to get anything other than a Flashing  power light and a solid amber Signal light.  I've registered, de-registered, waited 24hrs between registering and powering the device, etc, etc, but the result is always the same.  I have received text messages from Vodafone saying that it should now work, but nothing.

This is not the only device on my home network that provides a PPTP service on port 1723 .  I've currently disabled all other port forwarding entries and I've added port tiggering as follows so there should not be a problem at the moment.  Once it is working I will need to distinguish between the Vodafone sourced Port 1723 requests so I can distinguish them from the other service.  Can you tell me which source address range it will come from and I can distinguish the two.

I have a static Internet IP address of 92.27.83.75.

Emre,

Right,  I've captured a full scan of a working VSS3 up to a solid internet and service light, I've not traced while a call is in progress.  Too much to put the full trace in here as some 700+ packet exchanges and most are encrypted.  The main points beyond my reported DNS exchanges are:

 - Port 500: used for key exchange.  VSS always starts first with both source and destion ports set to 500, server always responds to source and destion ports set to 500, so the NAT will set-up a translation between the two from the VSS and no special entry should be required.

 - Port 4500: used for IPSEC traffic using NAT traversal.  Again, the VSS always starts first and the VSS source port and destination port set to 4500, server always responds with source and destion ports set to 4500, so NAT will set-up a translation between the two and no special entry should be required.  Also, VSS sends NAT keep alive messages every 30 seconds.  If your router has a NAT keep alive lower than 30 seconds then this could cause problems, but I've never seen a router with an option to set NAT keep alive timer option.  Linux does have an option.

 - Port 123 used for Network Time Protocol but only for destination address, no VSS NTP service is being used.  Therefore no need to provide any port 123 forwarding as its not a service on the VSS.  VSS gets a good response back from Vodafone NTP servers with correct time values.

 - Traceroute:  This one I find confusing and concerning.  The VSS does a traceroute to the addres of initial-ipsecrouter.vap.vodafone.co.uk (same traceroute as Vodafone ask us to on our PCs when debugging).  From the trace the VSS does the following:

-- Starts with a TTL (Time To Live) of 1 (i.e. one hop) to port 33434 as expected.  Unfortunately it gets no response from my Firewall due to the security configuration.

-- Then it does TTL of 2 (2 hops) to port 33435, which then gets as far as as my router.  This makes a correct ICMP response back to the VSS.  The VSS now knows that my router is the second hop, what its addres is and it can calculate the time.

-- Then it does TTL of 3 (3 hops) to port 33436, which gets a response from my ISP's router.  The VSS now knows that my ISPs router is the third hop and its time.

-- Then the VSS does 39 more attempts each with a TTL of 3.  Why?  Also, the packets alternate between 60 bytes and 1414 (I expect the MTU).  If I recall correctly, a traceroute should do TTL =4 then 5, 6, etc, etc, etc until it gets to the Vodafone router it is looking for.  Also, the first three lookups go to the right destination port of 33434 and then increment.  The fourth packet and beyond have the source port of 33434 and the dest port is stuck at 33444.  My ISP's router keeps making the correct ICMP response and I assume the VSS just determines that the vodafone servers are over 40 hops away but the delay to them is probably ok.  At face value this looks like an error in the VSS and would concern me.  Also, depending on a Firewall's rule sequencing I could believe that some routers will block incoming port 33434 in their firwall configuration before the NAT translations as it is used extensively by network scanners.  Perhaps this is why a DMZ configuration overcomes some problems people are seeing.

I didn't see any other ports being used by the VSS, but after looking through some 700 packets you never know I may have missed something.

I did not see any UPnP traffic.  I'm not a UPnP expert but I expected to see some attempt.

Vodafone,

Can you check if this traceroute behaviour is as you expect from the VSS.

Cheers,

Mark.

Hi Emre,

It’s great to see you’re getting amazing support from Mark_B, thanks Mark. It would appear that your router issue is currently in hand.

Hi Mark996,

It’s great to hear your Sure Signal is being resynced for you, let us know how you go on.

Hi whibbs,

Is the unit getting hot because of its location? If it’s in a corner, for example, are you able to move it to a different plug socket? I can see your Sure Signal connected to our servers in the early hours of this morning, are you still facing connection issues?

Thanks

Andrew

Hi whibbs,

Thanks for getting back to me. It looks like you may have a faulty unit as it’s still getting hot even on a new plug socket. We’ll need to look at getting you a replacement unit so, to get the ball rolling, I’ve just sent you a PM.

You can find your PM inbox here. If you can’t access this link, please ensure that the box next to “Turn on private messages” is ticked on this page, and let us know if you need any further assistance.

Follow the details in the PM and we’ll be in touch as soon as we can.

Thanks

Andrew

thanks for your reply i have sent you the details as requested.

Hello,

add me to the list please!!

soooo frustrating - I've had my VSS v3 (plug through type) for a couple of months now and have done nothing but sing its praises - until yesterday....

im having exactly the same issues all of a sudden...

my set up sees the VSS connected to my virginmedia superhub (which I think I'm right in saying is actually a netgear routergateway  internally).....it had been running faultlessly but as I say, not now....

while I class myself as relatively tech-savvy, I've gotta say I'm totally lost when it comes to networking, and so most of acronyms displayed in the previous posts go straight over my head!!!

can anyone please tell me in language that my 6 week old would understand just how to get the VSS working again?!

Ive tried all the usual and am putting off ringing vodafone customer services as I know all Ill get is the standard "turn it off then on again"?! (Which before you ask, Yes, I have tried!!!)

the signal where I live is so shocking, that I'm really reliant on the VSS working, so please help!!

ta,

mark.

Rang them, as predicted got the "unplug it, plug it back in", even told me to disconnect the power cable (which it doesn't have)......pathetic....

anyway, after much arguing, and me seemingly knowing more about the product then the rep, he's going to do a re-sync their end which will "sort everything out and we'll give you a call later to check its working" allegedly.....

the irony is, that if its not working, they won't be able to call me back as my iPhone 5 doesn't work at home - hence the need for a VSS!!!!

Well, I'm pleased to say that the re sync at vodafones end WORKED!! All back up and running within an hour.....

now though - new problem......my iPhone 5 just works through the VSS no probs at all, but my work blackberry (bold) although showing as connected (full strength 3G) is not recieving any emails or able to connect to data services.....???

Ive tried disabling it off my list of phones, and re-adding it.....re booted to etc....no joy...

anyone???
