I'm having the same problem with my new VSS (Serial Number: 40120914433) - good 3D voice connection, but no data connection.
I realise wifi is generally better, but I need a VSS data connection for occasions when the wifi is not operational.
Did the support team ever come back with a useful response or explanation?

Once again, merely posting here was enough to get a resolution (this is like 'Cardboard Guru' syndrome, where you see the mistake or error halfway through explaining the problem to someone else).
After power-cycling both the VSS and the mobile phone for the umpteenth time, the phone came up with a Vodafone pop-up prompt asking me to turn off wifi so Vodafone Wifi could be enabled (or registered?). When I did this, I got another phone prompt telling me it had been done, and voila - network data was working!
I'm now able to switch between using wifi and mobile data on the VSS without any problem.
I'm not sure where the pop-up Vodafone prompt came from (the My Vodafone app?), as I've not seen it before, but it did the job.
Maybe this can be of some help to others...
