I've been complaining about my SS not working for about a year. I know that a younger family member was messing with my phone around at that time and I now wonder if they did something to the phone settings.

For my HTC Desire to work with the SS what settings do I need on the phone?

Is it 'GSM/WCDMA Auto' (what its on now) or should I change it to GSM Only or WCDMA only?

Or should I just switch it on to 'connect to mobile network' and leave 3G on all the time? (I think that's what it was set to when the SS seemed to work better). If I leave it on 3G isn't this going to eat into my mobile usage allowance?

The SS is a 3G device and only a 3G device so your 'phone must be operating on 3G to make use the SS.

I don't have an HTC Desire so don't know what settings it offers etc. but I'd expect 'connect to mobile network' to be the correct setting and let it use 3G when it can.

Assuming that you have a wireless router, you should allow your 'phone to access your network at home using wifi. It will then (or at least should) use your broadband via wifi for all data traffic (bypassing the SS) and only use the SS for voice calls over 3G thereby making best use of your various allowances.

Thanks Philip. I'm fairly certain that was the setting it used to be on, so I've switched it back now. I'll also make sure to leave the WiFi on when I'm at home.

If it DOES work now I'll owe Vodafone a huge apology, and a big telling off to said young family member who messed with it in the first place!

I'll update in a few days when I've had time to see if it's working better.In the meantime thanks very much.
