SS-2 Failing again!! Red lighting and connection attempts, but nothing else - 3 days & counting..

Problems with SS-2 number two (hmmmm... appropriate phrase).

This unit is a replacement for the previous one that died at about 10 months. This replacement was working until a few days ago. Same symptoms as:

http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Vodafone-Sure-Signal/MkII-SS-red-lighting-occasionally-flashing-netwo...

To reiterate some of the info from the thread above, I am running with a Belkin F5D7633-4 Router.

This is working fine. No other issues.

To be honest, it looks as though this SS-2is going up the Swannee too.

S/N is 40120550724

Incidentally, I have had some text messages asking me to update the postcode of the SS-2 since it has been moved.

Well, it has been moved 17 inches from one cabinet to another, but I have updated the info on my registrations page regardless, just in case this vast majestic journey might have been detected and caused an issue. Yes, I have checked that the wired connections are still good too.

So, is this SS-2 on its death bed or is it a Voda system problem that is poking two fingers up to my SS-2?

More to the poin, are any of the SS-1 still available? The ones that my main client uses seem to be rock solid!

The predictability of the failure is is becoming a mixture of depressing and annoying. Deproying? Annessing??

Re: SS-2 Failing again!! Red lighting and connection attempts, but nothing else - 3 days & count

Hi Perdix

Thanks for your post here and for all of the information that you have provided.

I have resynchronised your device for you just now.

Can you try a factory reset of the Sure Signal to ensure everything has picked up correctly for me?

 - Hold down the reset button until all the lights show (about 30 seconds)

 - Keeping the reset button held down, remove then re-insert the power lead.

 - Once all lights display release the reset button.

-  The Sure Signal will come online in around 1 hour.

Please let me know how you get on with this.

Thanks

Wayne

Re: SS-2 Failing again!! Red lighting and connection attempts, but nothing else - 3 days & count

Thanks Wayne.

I have done that (in fact I'm getting a little bit used to it now).

I'd unplugged the SS for a while and then plugged it back in about four hours after your message.

It took a long time to hook back up, which it can do sometimes. Overnight it must have managed to do so.

It's now just after 5pm Sunday and it has droppped back to into attempting to connect again.

Now, this could just be a weather thing (there have been thunderstorms this afternoon) but my suspicions are that it is the same heat-soak failure as before.

I will see if it manages to reconnect any time soon....

Myles

Re: SS-2 Failing again!! Red lighting and connection attempts, but nothing else

Having been greeted by the dreaded single red light at 6:15 this morning, I powered down and left the SS-2 until a bit before 7.

This morning, it reconnected and managed to do so quite quickly.

I will see if and when it drops again.

Re: SS-2 Failing again!! Red lighting and connection attempts, but nothing else

OK, started to fail to hold the connection at 3pm today, regained it then dropped again.

Currently, at just before 5pm, phone and network lights are flashing and I don't have a connection yet again.... :smileysad:

I have to reiterate that (despite the fact that it is not in a warm area) I think that it is a component breakdown due to heat, that manifests itself once the unit is working for a while....

SS-2 not connecting/red lighting/not connecting/red lighting....etc,etc,etc....

This has been going on for a week now.... :manfrustrated::manfrustrated::manmad:

Please see http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Vodafone-Sure-Signal/SS-2-Failing-again-Red-lighting-and-connection-a...

The unit is still lurching between red lighting and attempting to connect. I cannot make or receive calls.

If I turn it off for a while( > 1 hour) it works for a short time and then drops back into the cycle of red lighting / both lights flashing.

I have performed partial resets, full resets and the normal speed/ping/traceroute tests (al viewable on the link above).

This unit is failing and, since I occasionally work from home, I know that I have missed calls from clients. I've even had to resort to driving to the nearest village with reception, diverting all my calls to my home number and then driving back home....

How do I get a replacement sent to me, as it seems pretty clear to me that the unit is faulty, probably component breakdown once it is warm.

Re: SS-2 not connecting/red lighting/not connecting/red lighting....etc,etc,etc....

Hi Perdix,

I must admit that given the light sequence it does sound like it is faulty.

So that we can get a replacement sorted for you I have sent you a quick PM with our contact details, please follow the instructions on the PM and a replacement can be arranged.

You can find your PM inbox here.

James

Re: SS-2 not connecting/red lighting/not connecting/red lighting....etc,etc,etc....

Thanks James. Email has been sent.
I'm wondering if there might be a bit of a design improvement opportunity on the SS-2 (note how I avoided saying design weakness)?
The SS-1's that my client uses seem to be rock solid in comparison....

Re: SS-2 not connecting/red lighting/not connecting/red lighting....etc,etc,etc....

Hi Perdix,

Thanks for the update.

To be honest it is usually seen as the VSS1 not being as stable as the VSS2 however as this is something that we are continually looking at improving I’m sure that if any issues are found then it will be addressed with future releases.
