Slows down my Broadband

When I switch on my suresignal it gradually slows donw my broadband from a steady 2MB/sec to around 500kbs or sometimes even less. If I switch the suresignal off, the speed immediately goes back up to 2MB.

I use BT brodaband option 3 - in  a country location hence slow speed. I have had problems with BT ADSL routers in the past, so have tried a TP-Link ADSL router instead, but still with exactly the same effect.

Can anyone help me get this working as I use my phone for business extensively and there is no Vodafone signal in this area. When I have Suresignal connected, then my (and other's) activity on the internet is very badly affected. As a result I can only switch on the Suresignal from time to time to check voicemail and recieve any texts.

Any ideas on router config that might resolve this issue gratefully accepted.

Re: Slows down my Broadband

I was in a similar situation and in the end I resorted to dedicating my adsl connection to the sure signal and had satellite internet installed for my internet needs, plus side 10mbs connection, downside having to pay for 2 broadband connections rather than the one.

Re: Slows down my Broadband

It would probably help if you clarified what you are measuring and how you are measuring it ...

There have been some reports of radio interference between the SS 3G and wifi on home networks - normally resolved by positioning the SS and wireless router further apart. This won't be an issue if you are using a wired connection for your measurement.

Otherwise the SS will always consume some bandwidth but shouldn't consume that much - 64Kbps each way per active call, though I assume you mean when there are no calls active? Beyond that, it polls constantly for incoming calls (350-400bps) and occasionally updates its configuration which will create competition for other network users while it is downloading - but only while it is downloading. If this were the cause of the 'slow down', then switching off before it had finished and only on again occasionally would pretty much guarantee that the problem would persist - far better to switch the SS back on a bedtime, let it get its updates done overnight and leave it on permanently.

Other things to check would include whether your mobile devices are making data calls in the background - to synchronise calendars, receive email etc. Always better to use wifi rather than 3G for that.

Re: Slows down my Broadband

I have the same issue but worse.  Connected Sure Signjal this week and get a great signal - but unusable broadband (always poor - max 2mb).  Unplug Sure Signal and broadband works, no vodafone signal.  Great! (not)

Kenin_S,

Are you using a Wifi or hardwired PC?

Re: Slows down my Broadband

I am in the same position. We turned on our Sure Signal last night and straight away the Broadband speed to my desktop pc plummeted.

My laptop is fine on the internet but my desk top which connects to the household wireless via a dongle goes really, really, really slowly when trying to load browsers and websites. Does anyone know why this is and what I can do to remedy it. Turning off the Sure Signal cures the problem.

I have no idea what to do.

Re: Slows down my Broadband

Hi Ladyrose,

To be honest the Sure Signal shouldn’t slow down your internet connection that much unless you have very poor speeds to begin with.

So that we can check this please can you do a quick speed test and ping test so that we can then advise you further.
