If i want to charge the phone, why can't I do this with the phone switched off?

Re: Charging battery!

I believe by connecting the charger automatically switches the phone on this is an operating system (OS) feature as while the phone is connected to a charger it enables the WIFI sync options for your device.

I have just tested with my Lumia and even switching the device off while the charger is connected the device automatically switches back on. This will only not happen if there is not enough charge in the device to initialise (then you will see a battery sign on the screen in red). If you do not want the device to be usable at all while charging then perhaps switching flight mode on while sleeping (get an app to quickly enable/disable) but other than that i can not see any other options to disable the switch on when connected to power option.

Re: Charging battery!

What a crazy idea. I mean you would not leave your unused laptop switched on while charging it would you!

Madness i tell you madness......

Thanks for your reply though

Re: Charging battery!

I think the logic behind it is that most people want their phones on 24/7 now and i think they would prefer you to do this as you are always using it in a sense.

I think most people these days leave their phones on 24/7 (i say most i certainly know all my family/friends never switch their phone off)

Re: Charging battery!

No i think your missing the point; in this day and age with people talking about carbon footprint, surely if the phone was switched off, then when the battery was fully charged, then the charger will not be charging.

I prefer not to have my mobile on during the night, spam emails etc etc

Its not the end of the world.....

Re: Charging battery!

If the charger is still connected and the power socket is still switched on then you will still be using power regardless - manufacturers would always recommend switching the charger off at the plug when the device is fully charged at this point you can then switch your phone off but it does not take any more power to charge while switched on.

Re: Charging battery!

It is indeed very annoying with the phone vibrating all night long with emails/texts/calls. I have always turned my phone off at night to avoid these issues, so that I actually stand a chance of getting some sleep, but no, not possible with this phone, as even if the phone's fully charged - I can't turn it off or the alarm wont work in the morning!! Yet another thing that I find odd, I've never had a phone before where the alarm doesn't function when the phone's off.

Re: Charging battery!

You can switch the mobile network off on the device by putting it into flight mode ?

Found in Settings
Flight mode

Re: Charging battery!

True, but makes much more sense to just be able to turn the phone off.

Re: Charging battery!

Yep, I think this is the same on all windows phone devices (it will switch off but not while charging) unless it is 100% drained but as soon as it has enough power it switches on - this must have something to do with the WIFI sync options on the device.

There is an app that will allow you to quickly enable/disable flight mode which is handy not ideal but a work around.

Feature wise like this its always worth posting a question on the microsoft pages to see what they say or on the Nokia forum so they can feedback.

Re: Charging battery!

It does seem strange doesn't it? Perhaps the phone controls its charging. That could explain it.  But why would you want to switch it off anyway? OK I often turn off the screen with the lock button and I would imagine that speeds up the charging somewhat but I never actually turn my phone off.  It rather needs to be ON in order to receive important calls! :smileyhappy:

What I do find annoying is the inability to select the times my phone received emails. As some have pointed out you have to either switch off data manually at night, or the email received notification sound. This is a step backwards as it was part of the ActiveSync options on my old Windows Mobile 6.5 phone where you could define peak and off-peak times and set email not to sync at off-peak (night) times.

Another backward step is the inability to use your own ringtone/sounds for text and email notifications. You have to use the Windows Phone standard sounds. Why? 6.5 could do it. Why can't 7.5 Mango?

None of this is Vodafone's fault of course. It's Microsoft! :smileyhappy:

Re: Charging battery!

I've heard this said before but it makes perfect sense to me.
Why do people expect a piece of equipment to still work when it is switched off?? Your TV doesn't. Your car (thank the lord!) doesn't. Your oven doesn't. Why should your phone? If you had a bedside radio/alarm clock you relied upon to wake you up each morning you wouldn't turn it off (by unplugging from the mains say) and still expect it to wake you up!

@dchester

Your laptop doesn't need to be switched on! My Camera digital camera doesn't need to be switched on to charge, so why should a phone?

Re: Charging battery!

It is just the way that Microsoft have designed the software - i imagine their thinking is when the phone is connected to a power source it is a great opportunity to synchronise to your computer. Also alot of people use their phone as an alarm clock/still want to receive notifications etc even while it is charging.

Most people i know do not switch their phones off at night (this may be different from the norm) so while it is charging it is ideal for the device to automatically switch on if it has totally drained.

Once the phone has fully charged you are able to switch the device off if you disconnect it from the power, this could be another reason they have developed it like this to ensure you switch the power off once the device has finished charging if you want to switch it off.
