Hopelessly inaccurate Maps and Drive

Hi there,

Enough folks seem to use these functions, so I assume (hope) I'm just missing something!

The nearest either Maps or Drive has got to my current location - in a variety of locations, also tried country/suburban/urban mix - is about half a mile! I prefer a real map anyday, so I'm not relying on these functions, but my experience so far suggests they're not worth turning on! Have I missed something? There's nothing (in fact hardly any options at all) available in Settings, and I've experimented with 3G on/off and Data on/off. Also tried the old 'turn off the phone and count to 30' trick!

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi Hubrad

Thanks for your post here. I’m sorry to hear that you are having problems with the GPS on your handset. I appreciate how frustrating this must be for you.

The Nokia Lumia uses A-GPS and there is no way to turn this off. A-GPS means it uses GPS with the assistance of cell sites in your area that will help pin point your exact location. It should use the GPS if there aren’t many cell sites available though.

You will need to have an active data connection to use this service properly. The only thing I can suggest that may get you the best results is to make sure;

You are outside with a clear view of the sky (No buildings or trees)

You give it approximately 15 minutes to lock on correctly

You do not cover the back of the phone ( I believe the GPS chip is in either the top or the bottom of the handset, so try alternating how you hold the phone to see if it gets the lock on any closer.

Please give this a go and let me know how you get on.

Thanks

Wayne

Re: Hopelessly inaccurate Maps and Drive

Thanks Wayne, working fine when I tried it yesterday! I must have either missed something or just not given it enough time.. is the 15 mins wait idea a regular thing or is it just the first time to get the phone recognised?

I still prefer 'real' maps!:smileytongue:

Re: Hopelessly inaccurate Maps and Drive

I would add that the phone does not seem to respond too well with not being in HDSPA/3G areas so if you have an edge connection or 2G then it may take a considerable amount of time longer to pin point your position and show it on the map.
