The new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have the impressive IP67 rating when it comes to water-resistance but Apple are still saying that the device shouldn’t be exposed to salt water – so what did one surfer do?
Exactly that – exposed the new devices to salt water!
In a video sponsored by electronics warranty company Square Trade, surfer Kai Lenny is seen testing the iPhone 6, 6s and iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in the ocean.
The devices are carefully strapped individually to the front of his surf board and the taken for a ride.
Within five minutes both the iPhone 6 and 6S have stopped working but the iPhone 7 was still performing fine after 30 minutes with no evidence of performance being affected in any way.
The iPhone 7 Plus did “OK” but the audio on the larger device wasn’t performing particularly well by the end of the test.
Although the results may suggest otherwise, we strongly advise you from taking your iPhone for a dip in the ocean.
Salt water can corrode any device and Apple have even taken the unusual step of advising users not to take their smartphone surfing.
Apple also warns that your device’s water resistance will diminish over time and Apple’s warranty does not cover water or liquid damage.
