Duplicate Contacts

Hi all

Got my iphone 4S 2 weeks ago and loving it.

I have a hotmail account and a icloud account (you know a .me) - Problem is when i turn both of them on i get 3 lots of contacts.

Question - Can i merge all the contacts into one?

Also if i have ny hotmail account on and save a contact to that it does not appear to go into the icloud account.

Its driving me nuts this problem.

Regards

Re: Duplicate Contacts

If you save a contact to Hotmail, why would you expect it to also make it to your iCloud account? They are separate services and the Iphone quite rightly keeps them separate. Also Hotmail doesnt support wireless updating so if you added a contact to your phone it wouldn't be there if you logged into Hotmail on your computer.

You cannot merge your contacts into one but you can decide which list of contacts the Iphone shows you - all of the different contact lists or just one or some of the different contact lists.

Re: Duplicate Contacts

Huh. I never had an ICloud account before and downloaded all my contacts onto my iPhone via hotmail. If they are separate then How did the hotmail contacts port over to the iCloud account?

[ Edited ]

If you have iCloud turned on for contacts then all of the contacts on your phone will automatically be synced to your icloud account. This is also true of photos and anything else that you have set to on for icloud. In other words icloud is being used as a backup medium.

You can turn this off by going to settings - icloud and turning contacts off. This will remove those contacts from icloud and also from your iphone.

Re: Duplicate Contacts

But that is not happening. My contacts are not being updated via the cloud. If I update a contact in my phone which is on my hotmail account iCloud does not back it up. I'll give you an example. I have an Emma in my hotmail contacts, I have updated her and all is well, but iCloud does not upload Emma to the iCloud, in fact emma is not in the ioud account at all. Sorry for sounding thick here, just need a little help as only want one set of contacts on my phone and would prefer to have the iCloud one.

Thanks in advance

Re: Duplicate Contacts

OK let's take a step back. The iphone will only sync contacts with Imap based email accounts or Exchange. Hotmail is neither of those and thus you wont be able to sync Hotmail contacts with your phone wirelessly.

I have tested icloud on my own phone and I now see I was wrong  - sorry about that. I've never used icloud for contacts and made an assumption.

You can use icloud like any address book by creating contacts on the phone and they will appear online as well and vice versa - full wireless syncing. It doesn't sync existing contacts to icloud as I originally thought. If you have a lot of contacts in hotmail you can export them and then import them into icloud and then you are away.

You can also use icloud for emails as well and that should give you wireless updating of emails - and it will give you an @me.com account.

I hope this helps and I haven't confused you too much - and I have learnt something as well.

You can in fact set up Hotmail to sync by setting it up using the Exchange option in Settings>Mail>Add account.

I did this with my Hotmail account but did not find it suitable for my purpose so deleted it and now use the POP3 for Hotmail.

Re: Duplicate Contacts

I'm not surprised. You can do the same with Gmail and I did like that at all.

I now have a personal hosted exchange account with Simply Mail and it is perfect for my needs.

If you set up the Hotmail account on your iPhone and used the Windows Live Hotmail  option when you did so then it is already POP3.

Gentle enough? :smileywink:

Re: Duplicate Contacts

@kids

If it is a pop3 then why does the icloud not update and duplicate the hotmail contacts?

I set up the hotmail account by clicking add account> Microsoft Hotmail

Re: Duplicate Contacts

Your Hotmail contacts will not duplicate to iCloud. After you have turned contacts in iCloud on go to contacts and at the top of the screen press groups. On the screen that appears choose iCloud. This will now be your active address book and new contacts will be added to your iCloud account on the phone and online wirelessly. They will NOT appear as contacts on your Hotmail account. As I said yesterday, you can export your Hotmail contacts on the Hotmail website and import the, via the iCloud website. Otherwise set them up on the phone manually. I don't believ there's a way on the phone of copying contacts from one address book to another.

Re: Duplicate Contacts

Oh dear - two invalid assumptions in two days. I had seen an export facility on Hotmail and and import facility on icloud and had assumed they would be compatible.

They are not!!

I have done some research on this and here is one thread I have found on the Apple support communities

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3515161?start=0&tstart=0

If you are using a mail client such as Outlook on a computer it might be possible to move from one service to another but it doesnt look as though there is an easy fix.

Sorry - both for having misled you twice and for the fact that you cannot do what you want to do.

As long as either Outlook or Outlook Express is being used  it is possible to export them from Hotmail as a csv file and import them to that address book  and then export them from there as a vcf file.

A bit long-winded but it seems to be the only way.

Re: Duplicate Contacts

Also it looks as thought iCloud will only accept one vcf record import at a time.

It you have a lot of contacts that could be frustrating
