iPhone 4 and 4S

Hi all,

I currently work in IT and deal with hundreds of handsets on a daily basis, but this one has me stumped!!!

I have a personal iPhone4 that recently has an iOS update to version 5.1.1

Before then everything was fine, but maybe a coinsidence? since the update I no longer can hear anyone on calls.

The Loud speaker is fine, it is clear of debris in the headset jack, no headphones plugged in and the volume is on full.

The other end can hear me! but I can't hear a sound at all, no hissing, crackling or anything.

If I plug a headset in I can hear fine.

I even backed up the phoen and carried out a hard reset.... followed by a full firmware restore through iTunes.

But none of the above has worked!

Is this a speaker fault or is it something to do with the update or what?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried putting the headphone jack in and out a few times quickly? Sometimes the phone thinks the headphones are still plugged in even when they aren't. When you change volume what does the phone say? If it says headphones you know that is the problem.

Otherwise it sounds like a hardware fault and a visit to an Apple store would be in order.

Thanks, but I mentioned that it wasn't showing as headphones plugged in due to debris or such.

Working with phones most days, that was the first thing I tried, possibly why its so frustrating!

Difficult to accept a hardware fault when it happened just as the iOS was updated to 5.1.1

I know you said there wasnt any debris but there are lots of reports of a micro switch of some kind in the jack socket getting stuck for no apparent reason that is cured by a rapid in and out motion.

There is no generic problem with the update but it has clearly caused you a problem.

The usual troubleshooting methods with an iphone are reset - restore - restore as new.
