New iPhone 4S in UK and moving to Australia

Hello
I am thinking of upgrading to a new iPhone 4S. I am an existing VF customer coming to the end of my contract in a few weeks.
I am, however, moving to Australia to work for 12 months. I want to keep the UK number active while I am away and I will still receive calls on it so I am not too bothered that I will be paying for a UK contract while away.
However, what I would like to do is to get an Australian SIM and put it in my new iPhone 4S and then put my VF sim in a old phone but keep it active and use that to communicate as necessary.
Therefore
a) can my phone be unlocked to allow me to do this before I go, even though I will still have around 18 months of the contract remaining
b) is VF passport the best way to do this or are there other options
Thank you
R-UK

The answers to that are yes and probably yes, you could research cost of phones abroad, and then just move your contract to PAYG, then you could still use your uk sim card, keep your number, and provided you make a chargeable call every 6 months then your number will stay. Then any contract costs in Australia could be used for making Australian calls.

Hello
Thank you
Sorry, I wasn't clear
I am thinking of taking out a brand new two year contract in the next few weeks
I will therefore be under this contract while in Australia and will not be able to move to PAYG
Cheers

You can get the phone unlocked before you leave:
If the device is on a Pay Monthly agreement then the device can only be unlocked by the registered owner and this is free.
For a Pay As You Go phone however as there is no requirement to register then this can be unlocked providing the required information here: http://campaigns.vodafone.co.uk/UnlockCodeRequestF
orm/ is provided and there is £20 credit for the payment on the Pay As You Go SIM.
The end user needs to have an active Vodafone SIM card and to be in theUKto be able to unlock any handset.
The request is made by completing the NUC request form but the phone must be in the UK and active on Vodafone for the unlock to be processed.

Hi r-uk,
Thanks for posting! I've sent you a private message so that we can set this up properly for you with the instructions for unlocking your new iPhone 4S when it comes, setting up the new deal and ensuring you have the appropriate sized British SIM for the other handset you'll be using the new plan on. We can get this all sorted through the eForum team no problem to save you going from pillar to post. I'm sure there's plenty other things demanding your attention before you set off after all. ![]()
You can find your PM inbox here.
Cheers, Ben

I must say that I'm happy to read this post as I'm in a similar situation.
I spend a lot of time in Greece and would like to be able to use my Vodafone Greece sim card in my iPhone 4S whilst I'm there.
So I too will be requesting a unlock code for my iPhone 4S to enable me to sim swap when I'm there.

Firstly fill in the unlock request form:
http://campaigns.vodafone.co.uk/UnlockCodeRequestForm/ wait 4-5 working days for the request to be processed and then connect the phone to iTunes with any non Vodafone UK sim card, You can either borrow one from a friend or get a cheap PAYG card from any seller. One you connect and get the confirmation that the phone is unlocked you can then use any sim card in the phone providing it from a carrier that supports the iPhone.
