Tethering When Roaming

Hi,

I've looked through the forum and haven't come across an answer to the questions of how tethering charges work when roaming.  If I'm in Europe, where the £2 per 25MB per day charge applies, what happens if I enable personal hotspot and download the 25MB of data on my laptop/iPad?  Am I charged £2?  Am I charged £5? Am I charged £7?  Does anyone have a definitive answer as to how this charging works?

Thanks for any info!

Hi rhino7

That’s a really good question.

I'd like to make sure that I give the correct answer on this so I will do a bit of digging for you.

I'll reply back as soon as possible.

Thanks

Re: Tethering When Roaming

This ismt a direct answer but I would avoid using a phone on a UK contract for data when abroad. I would buy a payg sim with data in that country and use that for tethering. Buy a wifi hotspot if you don't have another phone for your existing number usage.

It avoids any unknown charges and is a much better idea.

Re: Tethering When Roaming

I appreciate that the two of you have taken the time to reply and the suggestion to use a PAYG sim or use wifi is good advice, but I'd still like to know what I'll be charged if I do enable tethering when abroad.  It isn't something I'd do very often but it's good to have the option available ..... and to know the cost!

Re: Tethering When Roaming

I am also interested to know, if you coming with friends personal hotspot would be very useful as for 2 pounds in europe you can get 25Mb, then one person is sharing connection others can use it :smileyhappy: but the question is if vodafone will charge extra 5 for enabling hotspot.

Re: Tethering When Roaming

It will probably be the highest amount they can wrangle. Paying for your data 3 times (tarrif data, roaming data and tethered data) then probably some special extra fee in top called roaming tether charge. Don't use Vodafone abroad, get a local sim and use that. Absolute robbers!

Re: Tethering When Roaming

There is absolutely no point getting another sim if i travel for a few days. the prices should become affordable, but the lack of information is really disappointing.

Re: Tethering When Roaming

It's almost a month since I posted the original question. Surely it can't be that difficult to own up to what you're going to charge people for using one of your services?

Re: Tethering When Roaming

Mmmmm, looks like someone's just going to have to try it and see.  I'm not going to be away for a couple of months but I'll give it a go.  In the meantime if anyone else wants to try it and report back it would, I'm sure, be appreciated by many.

Absolutely unbelievable that after all this time none of the mods have been able to obtain a definitive answer.

Re: Tethering When Roaming

I tethered (around 12mb) in France via Personal Hotspot and have not been charged for it.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your patience with this one.

I've checked and your tethering data will be charged at the same rate as 'normal' data whilst you are abroad. More information can be found at our Roaming Pages.

Kindest Regards,
