Unlock Iphone 4

Hi, I am really hoping you can help! I am recently moved to New Zealand, thinking that my Iphone 4 will work in here. I am trying to unlock it for a couple weeks now and getting desperate!
When I put the NZ SIM card in, it hasn't got any signal. If I connect it to iTunes it says that The SIM card inserted in this Iphone does not appear to be supported. So I've filled up the NUC request webform and got a message back that my IMEI is not matching with the vodafone database and that I am suppose to call them ( not very keen on that as it will cost me a lot of money ) to have my IMEI updated.
I still have a contract with vodafone running until March but now even my UK vodafone SIM card stopped working!
So could you please give me some advice on what to do now?
Thanks
Lenka
