iOS 5 Community Hints and Tips

[ Edited ]

So, many people will have downloaded the new iOS5 to there handsets, and some are even lucky enough to have the new iPhone 4S.

But how many people are baffled about the new functions and how to use them? If you have any questions or need any help with any of the aspects of the new iOS5, then please ask and we can all help each other out.

I'll start us all off with an example -

One that seems to pop up is how to use the camera from the locked screen?

If you double tap the home button from the locked screen, you will see a camera icon appear in the lower right corner. Push this and then the camera function opens up. You can also use the volume up button to take the picture :smileyhappy:

WiFi Sync - iOS5 How to

[ Edited ]

This is NOT what I was hoping the WiFi Sync feature would be like... Sad.gif

Perhaps I am being naive but I was hoping that as soon as i came into range of my Home Wifi that a sync would just happen!

So wire-free synchronisation isn't quite there yet!

WiFi Sync.png

How to WiFi Sync iOS5 to your iTunes:

1) First you need to connect your phone to your PC and allow it to sync with iTunes.

2) In iTunes, click on your device and make sure that you are in the "Summary" window.

3) Come down to Options and Tick - "Sync with this iPhone over Wifi"

wifi sync setup.png

4) Click Apply and disconnect the phone from your PC.

5) With iTunes open on your PC, Plug the Phone into a Power socket.

6) On your phone, open Settings, then General Settings.

7) Scroll down to "iTunes WiFi Sync". You will see the word Sync is now in Bold Black lettering.

8) Before I had time to press the word sync it had already started.

That's it Sync Done!

I unplugged the phone during the Sync to see what happened and it just carried on. Up to you if you want to risk it?

Setting up custom vibrations on iOS 5 or iPhone 4S

[ Edited ]

Want a customized vibrate for each caller or that someone special, here's how -

Settings > General > Accessibility > Custom Vibrations > On

Then go to

Settings > Sounds > Vibration Patterns

From here you can select an option or even create your own :smileyhappy:

If you want a specific contact to have a unique Vibrate alert then follow this -

Contacts > Select the contact you want to assign a unique vibrate pattern to > Edit > Vibration > Select the option you want

Turn on LED flash for alerts on iOS 5 or iPhone 4S

[ Edited ]

Another feature, maybe just for fun for most, is the LED Flash for Alerts. When on, this prompts your phone to trigger the LED when you receive a message, email or if the phone is on silent :smileyhappy:

Settings > General > Accessibility > LED Flash For Alerts > On

Delete a number from my recent calls on iOS 5 or iPhone 4S

[ Edited ]

You can also delete individual numbers in your recent calls. This was always something I was surprised took Apple so long long to implement!

In your recents list on calls, the number you want to remove you simply swipe left to right across that number and you get the option to delete it from the list.

You can also click 'edit' in the top right of the screen and delete by clicking the red circle on the numbers you want to remove.

Using the Reader functionality on iOS 5 or iPhone 4S

[ Edited ]

Another feature that I like, but seems to have a mind of its own, is the reader function in Safari.

When browsing a site that has a lot of pictures or imagery, you sometimes get the option in the address bar that says 'Reader'
When you click on this it removes all the images and lists just the text to make it easier to read.

I found the BBC site works great for this when you drill down to a story, but some sites don't offer the feature at all, I guess some sites may not offer it just yet or that Safari is struggling to determine what is just text relevant to that story.

Re: iOS 5 Community Hints and Tips

[ Edited ]

Great thread Bobbin!

To make this easier for people to use, I've renamed it to a hints and tips thread. That way it'll just be comments added by the community, and we can harvest stuff from the main question threads to add here.

I've also edited the reply titles to specify the feature they help with- this will help with search optmisation and make the useful into easier to find, hope you don't mind :smileyhappy:

The new threads I've created with posts moved from this thread are:

Using Siri with contacts with similar names

Making sure my iPhone uses WiFi when possible

Battery life when using iOS 5

How do I set up iMessage?

LED alerts on iOS 5

Using Photo Stream

[ Edited ]

Photo stream I have found nice, when you turn it on other devices on the same iOS5 can view your photo's or vice versa using the same icloud account. There are other ways and settings to use icloud sharing and storing but not looked into yet. Loving the voice activation on everything including Siri.

Text Tones

Under Settings -> Sounds, there are some new text tones. My favourite is Sherwood Forest. The "Suspense" tone is reminiscent of the Matrix film. More importantly, you can now use a regular ring tone as your text alert message, making it possible to have a much longer duration sound.

One tap 'scroll back to the top' (music, contacts or email)

[ Edited ]

If you're towards the bottom of your music, contacts or emails and want to return to the top all you need to do is tap on the status bar at the top of the screen once (where it says Vodafone UK etc.)

This will instantly zoom you back up to the top of the page. Much easier than having to scroll up manually and especially useful when you've scrolled through old emails and want to return to the most recent asap.

Lock screen to portrait mode only

If you want to lock the screen into portrait mode (e.g. if you're reading a book or an email while in bed but get sick of the screen flipping to landscape) then you can do this by double tapping the home button to bring up the task manager then scrolling across to the new portrait lock button (shown below in the bottom left corner)

Capture a screenshot on your iPhone

[ Edited ]

An old one from earlier models but still very useful for those who might be new to using an iPhone (I've seen quite a few questions on the internet on how you actually do it)

If you ever want to do a screen capture on your phone just press down the power button and the home key at the same time. You'll hear a clicking noise and the image on your screen at that moment will be stored directly to your Photos :smileyhappy:

Crop a photo directly within iOS5 Photos app

[ Edited ]

It was always a pain in the past to have to launch a third party app to crop a photo you've just taken with the camera

Now you can do this within Photos. Just click edit (top right corner) then crop (bottom right corner) and adjust your image however you want it by dragging on the screen. When you're happy click the yellow crop button.

The constrain option at the bottom is also useful if you want an automatically sized crop frame to appear, e.g. 3 x 2, 5 x 7, 8 x 10, 16 x 9 etc.

Create new photo albums directly on your iPhone

Perhaps my favourite improvement of iOS 5 (especially coming from an earlier software version on my 3GS). Enter 'Photos' and there's an edit button on the main album screen. Press this and it'll populate an 'add button'. Here you can generate a new album directly on the phone. Once created go into one of your already populated albums, tick the photos you want in your new album and it'll make a copy of them. Great for tidying up your photos rather than having one massive camera roll.

Just to expand on that a bit.

You have to press and release the two buttons to take a screenshot - if you hold them down waiting for the shutter click sound you'll get the Power Off slider as this is the way to reset an iPhone that has locked up (stopped responding).

Also, as well as the shutter sound, the screen flashes white when the snap has been taken - this is because you don't hear the shutter click if you have the Mute switch on.

Re: Showing Battery Usage in Percentage

A useful thing I have found is to change the battery usage icon to show a percentage level, think this show more of an acurate usage on your battery life:  settings - general - usage - turn on battery percentage

New Weather app features in iOS 5

The Weather app has a new tab "Local Weather" that is enabled if you allow Weather access to your location.

Also, you can tab on the today line, and it will expand to show an hour-by-hour breakdown.

Notifications Blind

[ Edited ]

Another feature to look at is around Notifications, as you can in Android you can drag down the top bar from any screen i believe it works and this will present the notifications section. It will also display weather and stocks updates for your location.

You can manage your notifications and how they appear in Settings > Notificaitons
