Respond to alerts directly from lock screen

A really useful new feature is the ability to respond to Alerts directly from the Lock Screen. Just slide/swipe the notification from left to right and it'll go straight to the relevant place, e.g. text message, Facebook, Calendar event, etc. without needing to first unlock the screen.
Note that you seem to need to do a full screen-width slide rather than a quick "flick", presumably to prevent accidental activation. So drag the icon at the left side of the alert all the way to the right hand edge of the screen

Sending texts by either iMessage or SMS.
The type field has a greyed out text font stating if the msg will be an iMessage or SMS.
For those who are not sure which modem will be used.

1. Make sure your computer is connected to a wireless network and is running iTunes.
2. Your Iphone needs to be plugged in to your computer to initiate Wi-Fi Sync for the first time, select your device in Itunes and under Summary make sure Sync with this Iphone over wi-fi is ticked
3. Open the Settings menu on your Iphone home screen, Navigate to General, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync
4. At this point, you should see a list of all computers available on the Wi-Fi network. Select the computer you want to sync with, and tap the Sync Now button.
Important: Don't eject your Iphone from Itunes or use the safely remove hardware in windows, just make sure your Iphone as finished syncing the just simply unplug it.
Congratulations! If you’ve done everything correctly, your device should sync wirelessly with your computer, and will now do so automatically whenever you have your device plugged in and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.

Use the Timer to Turn Off Your Music

It’s great to fall asleep listening to your favourite music. However, you don’t want your iPhone playing music all night. Apple has provided an easy solution, but often over looked!
Within the Clock app, set a timer for however long you want the music to play. Then, instead of choosing a ring, choose to Sleep iPod when the timer ends.

Another way to scroll through Contacts

Everyone knows that you can scroll through the Contacts list on your iPhone two different ways, either flick your finger on the list to scroll up or down, or tap on one of the letters on the alphabet running down the right side of the screen to jump to contacts beginning with that letter. But there is a third way: hold your finger on the alphabetical list and then slide up and down, you’ll be able to scroll through your Contacts in a more controlled manner than by flicking your finger

redpages wrote:If you're towards the bottom of your music, contacts or emails and want to return to the top all you need to do is tap on the status bar at the top of the screen once (where it says Vodafone UK etc.)
This will instantly zoom you back up to the top of the page. Much easier than having to scroll up manually and especially useful when you've scrolled through old emails and want to return to the most recent asap.
Only thing missing is a similar way to jump to the bottom - a strange omission IMHO

Top tip there! I never knew that and I find the letters too small and close together to accurately tap the one you want.
Thanks for posting this - kudos duly awarded!

The fact that you have to do this manually - same for normal SMS messages, not just iMessages - is, IMO, a very poor feature of iOS. Jeez, even my old Nokia 3410 would repeatedly try to automatically resend the SMS if it fails first time. Many times, I've found a message that didn't get sent!

I believe that the emoticons only appear as such to the recipient only if they also have an iPhone

Switching between (ABC) and (123) on the keyboard can be an effort if all you need to use is one number, try holding your finger on the (123) and drag your finger to the number or symbol you want, it will auto switch back to (ABC) when you let go.
You can do the same with the shift key, just hold finger on it and drag to the letter you want, it will then be in capital.
To keep the Cap Lock on all the time just double click the Caps key.
Holding your finger on many of the letters and symbols will reveal other characters.

You can select a word or text string, and then make it bold, italic or underline. by holding down on the word and choosing Select.
Need to look up a word you just typed? hold down on the word and choose select, from the menu that appears select Define, which provides a dictionary entry for the selection.
