Got this off iPhone_News twitter feed (You should follow if you havn't already brilliant udates, news etc) basically have seperate sources to download the new iOS.
You can install them easy enough, just plug your iPhone in and instead of using the software updater from apple you just go to the 'restore' button and hold shift and click (and a explorer will pop up) or if on mac I think its the alt key.
Guides on the internet are all over, I picked up a quick one off Google.
If you are downloading make sure its a IPSW file (iPhone Software), don't get caught with the DMG extension if your Windows as I don't think it can be extracted (DMG is Mac extractable).
It's perfectly safe to install this way, this is how I have installed the BETA packages over the past few months.
This is obviously just a quicker way to get the iOS if Apple servers are slow, if its too confusing then be sure to just use the Apple Software Updater.
Always backup before installing Apple Firmware!

I am now beyond tired though, all I can say is it seems lots snappier than before, but maybe I am just imagining that =)
I also LOVE the new reminders app. Perfect for those of little memory like myself =D

A dmg file is a mac disc image and it is extractable with the right tools such as macdrive, the file contained within is the same as you will download direct from apple

Just managed to upgrade my iPad (1st Gen) to iOS5 and so far so good. I did get one 3200 error but after trying to install again it worked fine.
Not seeing a massive advantage to the new features on the iPad so far. The notification thing is okay but there doesn't seem to be a weather widget and there's not a ton of avitivity as yet. iMessage will come in handy once all my friends have updated so can't use that at the moment, other than that it seems the same as before.
I'm hopefully getting my 4S on Friday so looking forward to trying it on an iPhone. I imagine I'll appreciate the changes more as I'm upgrading from an old 3G model.

I've been stuck on the Backing up bit for over an hour now, I don't know whether to cancel it or hold out and see what happens. I don't need my phone until 2pm when I go out anyway, it's just annoying that it seems to be stuck.

I think I'm getting there now - I've been watching the following for the past couple of hours slowly moving along,
Strange thing is, the iPhone itself has updated and can be accessed with iOS 5 on there (but still with half the apps and music missing).
Is this normal and can anyone else move freely around their phone while it's still plugged in and restoring?
I always thought you'd be on the static 'connected to iTunes' screen when sync and restore took place??
