i just bought an iphone 4s yesterday and for some reason i cant connect to 3g, please help!!!

i tried those steps and i still cannot connect to 3g, pretty sure my problem isnt area specific as my flatmate who has the same phone has no problem with 3g at all

The first and easiest thing to check is that 3G is actually turned on - settings - general - network - enable 3G

Then the usual trouble shooting steps are reset - restore  - restore as new.

If 3G is on and resetting or restoring doesn't work and the phone never connects to 3G it might be a hardware fault. In that case book an appoinutment with a Genius at an Apple store and they will replace it there and then if it is faulty.
