Google maps whilst mobile data switched off

So... I am currently in the USA and have my mobile data switch off. When I had wifi I looked up directions on Google maps to use when out of range.

When I used this the blue dot was still following me! How does this work even though the data is switch off and I have no wifi? I also put the phone on airplane mood and it still had the blue dot following me!

Most importantly is there anyway I can be charged for this??

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi

It looks to be location tracking you via the inbuilt GPS

If you've turned off Mobile Data in Settings-Mobile/Cellular-Mobile Data that kills connection from the phone to any Network for Data.

Are you hitting any WiFi Hotspots etc as you travel maybe ?

To add if your concerned you can turn location tracking off.

Settings.
Privacy.
Location Services.
GoogleMaps.

Choose it and choose Never.
