N78 : Can't Update Google Maps Locked in firmware?
#1

Attempting to update to 2.2.x via Google's site results in "Cannot install. Component is built-in."
Is there any way to update Google Maps on this phone? I'm a bit disappointed that having just upgraded from an old 6234, I've actually LOST some major features and it wont let me install the available update.

Well, I can completely understand the frustration you must be enduring over this
Have you tried uninstalling the applciation, then freshly re-installing? I can't try this at the moment I'm afraid, so you'll have to get back to me on this one.
Your other option is to try the Nokia PC Suite / Phone Updater Application to see if a newer version of base firmware is available for your handset - this might include a newer Google Maps version.
Let us know how you go with the above suggestions!
In the mean time, if you're a new N78 user, have you seen our N78 Help Center page? Lots of information and useful guides on how-to's and query solutions. Let us know what you think!

Thanks for your post and I'm sorry to hear you are having issues here.
Have you tried everything that Daz has suggested above?
Could you let me know how you get on and exactly what sort of problems you are experiencing.
Thanks

You'll have to bear with me on this one as I'm running this through on an N96, therefore the menu systems will be similar. To uninstall Google maps do as follows:
1. Menu
2. Applications
3. Utilities
4. App Manager
5. Installed Apps
6. Look for the Google maps app
7. Options
8. Uninstall
Please let me know if you encounter any problems, there's also a handy N78 section on the Vodafone Help Centre, have a look.
Thanks

I think that might be part of the problem as the error says "component built in". Maybe the google maps app is built in the firmware?!
I think that's exactly the problem. You can't uninstall it and you can't update it. We need new firmware with the new version of Google Maps.

Thanks for coming back to us here.
It looks like druidh is correct on this one. It looks like the Google Maps on your Nokia is tied into the firmware and therefore will not let you update it. hense the error message you are getting.
I'll pass this feedback onto our devices teams so this can pop it into their suggestion box for future firmware updates and changes.
Thanks

Wayne isn't in at the moment so I'm not sure if he's heard any updates regarding this matter, but I'll be sure to ask him the next time he's in
Can you confirm if this is still an ongoing issue?

Sorry hamboid. Looks like buying this through Vodafone was a REALLY bad idea. Let that be a lesson for you.

So google latitude is supposed to be good, my mates are using it, Nokia are promoting it for their phones including the N78 but us Vodafone N78 users are uniquely stopped from installing it because they were 'trying to help' by pre-installing an unupgradeable old version of it. The firmware then 'tries to help' by spotting that you've already got the software so shouldn't need to install it. Why o why would you do this and then inhibit the upgrade path so that no new features of google maps can be installed ? It's frustrating that it actually took Vodafone developers two sets of active effort to make the once good Nokia firmware this useless.
Vodafone, do I really have to de-brand the phone firmware to get access to the free google latitude software ? All we need is a firmware version without google maps on it at all, then we can install it ourselves. Please let me know when this will come out, or if there aren't any plans to do please fess up so we can get on with the risky business of removing your software completely or changing network.
thanks,
frustrated N78 user

I can see you’re frustrated and waiting eagerly for a new update.
Soon as there is a new ROM available for the N78, we’ll be sure to let you know.
In the mean time keep a tab on our Software upgrade's page which will inform you if and when an update is available.
Thanks

Sukhi - instead of us hanging around, might I suggest that you actually do something about it? You know - ask questions, get a planned date, that sort of thing???? Writing a simple response on here does not constitute customer service.

I completely understand your frustration here however there isn’t anything more we can tell you.
Please see our firmware statement for further information.
All the best,
