Tethering Using Htc Magic

Can anyone in possession of a HTC magic clarify something for me as i've been unable to find an answer either on this forum or on the web.
Bascailly have you been able to ''tether' your HTC Magic to your laptop i.e use the Magic as a modem to connect to the web? If so, how did you achieve it? Was it difficult?
I realise that this is available on the G1 using an app from the android marekt place, although google removed this app before restoring it for all G1 users outside of the US. Can you see this app on your Magic?
I also realise that connecting to the web in this way will rapidly chomp through the monthly 500mb data allowance. Basically i use a HTC mobile for voice on orange and a three 3G dongle for data (approx 200mb per month) to access work email on my laptop. I would love an android phone and want to get all my needs from a single contract/device.
I just called vodaphone tech support and the guy said he was 99% sure that tethering will be possible on the Magic but could not confirm until he recieves his upgrade tomorrrow. I wanted to double check before i go thru the hassle of getting may PAC code from orange.
Thanks in advance!

I can see your interest in the HTC Magic its a really great phone!
At the moment the HTC Magic cannot be used as a Tethered modem. I've had a browse over some of the Apps on the Market and cannot see any that will allow the device to be tethered as a modem.
I'm sure in the future that this may be possible through the introduction of a 3rd party App. At the moment though, there doesn't seem to be one available
Let me know if you have any more questions and we'll be happy to help
Heres a link to more info on the HTC Magic on our website

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback.
I have been on google and have located some apps to allow tethering, however the support info for the ones i found (afraid i don't have the names to hand) only mention the T-mobile G1 and/or Android v1.0.
The more i read about the Magic, the keener i am to come across to vodafone but until someone can confirm that they have tethering working on their own Magic or a G1 running android 1.5 i am not prepared to cancel my current voice and data contracts just yet.
I realise that it is still early days with this device and more info will come out in time, but if someone could try tethering their Magic it would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
darren.

Allegedly Google pulled all Tethering apps from Marketplace during March 2009 to ensure compliance with Mobile Network Operator's Ts&Cs. There are numerous articles on the web - one such is this one --> http://www.slashgear...market-3139485/
Good news.
You may be able to obtain Tethering apps to install outside of Marketplace - read the comments section following the same article over here --> http://androidcommun...arket-20090331/

I believe that's only for the US. Or, rather, they were removed everywhere, then put back on in the rest of the world.

You'll now have a: HTC Dream Composite ADB Interface. You can use command line to access this.
Working on getting PDANet or similar now will post results.

PDAnet can be downloaded from here: http://www.junefabri...droid/index.php
You will need to enable USB debugging on the device: Tap Settings, Applications, Developerment and tap USB Debugging.
The install will automatically install the PDAnet app on the phone, you will need to enable the option to install non marketplace apps: Tap Settings, Applications, Tap on Unknown Sources
Once completed, install the PDAnet app on your PC, half way through the install it will prompt you to connect the Adroid phone and ask you to install drivers automatically.
When finished, the PDAnet app runs in the systray, or you can create a manual DUN connection using your own settings.
Voila your HTC Magic as a tethered modem! Although I don't believe this is supported by VF, someone may want to clarify this.

I believe this is supported by Vodafone but the data used is not part of the 500 MB allowance so can get very expensive very quickly. Last time i asked about it the charges quoted were around £2 a MB so using 200 MB a month this way is not something i would want to do!

As you are aware there are no Tethering applications on the Market presently.
However there are a couple of workarounds that have been suggested here which are great. However as these are outside of our realms I'm afraid we would be unable to offer any kind of support should things go wrong or not work.
With this in mind if you do manage to get things working and you have the internet pack on your account the data will come out of this. You will need to be aware that there is a fair usage policy of 500MB which will be used up alot quicker on a PC due to the pages being bigger and also updates that may be running in the background, so this is something to be aware of. Also, you will be charged for going over the 500MB if this is consistantly done.
Let me know if any body has any further questions and I'll be happy to help
Thanks

Hi Lee,
Thanks for the clarification.
So, translated into the very simplest of terms
2) You do so at your own financial risk if [in all likelihood] you "consistently" exceed your 500MB data bundle
3) You're on your own if it doesn't work - don't ask Vodafone for assistance (seems fair enough to me)
Next question - when are Vodafone going to up the 500MB to something considerably less miserly

I've also tried with a Windows XP installation, but PDANet will not detect my Magic. Another posting mentions installing usb drivers from the sdk. I've downloaded these, but how do you install - do I need to update a particular device in the device manager or something else?

Yes, I have to pretty much agree with your summary
There are currently no plans to increase the 500MB bundle to include more of an allowance. I think you may struggle to go over that amount, in the time we have had the data bundles available I am yet to encounter a customers' account when this 500MB allowance has been exceeded when using the internet directly from your handset. (using your phone as a modem would be a different story!)
Can I take this opportunity to give you a link which you may find useful for your handset? HTC Magic Hints and Tips.
I trust this clarifies the issue for you.

PDANet should prompt you to enable USB debugging and when to plug the device in, this will then install the drivers. If it doesn't pick the device up I would check firstly the device shows as charging and second that any anti-virus or firewall is disabled in case this is conflicting.
The SDK contains a: \usb_driver\x86 folder with the drivers for the device if you need to manually point.
