I dont know but somehow I beleive mods that its google. The HTC Magic is unlocked and can be used on any network. One can also officially buy GOOGLE branded unlocked phone as well officially. So if VF is to push the updates how users on other network will receive it? Since, the only way possible to receiving updates is OTA it can not be totaly carrier dependent
I know for sure, one of my friends who has HTC-Magic and not on VF received update same time as me!
These are my thoughts!

Okay - think of it this way - google can't "push" an update (how do they know where the phones are) so you would have to go to settings and select the check for updates option (unless android is periodically checking for updates, which it does with the market)
I'm sure this would probably work, but what I think happens is that google say to the network - here is an update, push it to your subscribers, and the network will do it in stages to avoid dos'ing their own network.
At the end of the day, we can only go on what has happened before - cupcake was rolled out to the "with google" g1's by the network, and I believe that the early magic phones had an update rolled out to them by vodafone.
But it doesn't really matter - as long as we get the update within a reasonable time period !!

BUT.
I don't like all this silence. Someone must know somewhere WHEN these updates will be applied; I don't get why there's this air of silence ... irrespective of VF's policy on not commenting on firmware updates blah blah, given the unique nature of this handset (ie Donut's been on the cards for months) they must have some idea, some techie in an office at their Berkshire HQ, who's been told it'll be rolled out commencing xxx ... we're not talking a rubbishy firmware update for some rubbishy phone ... we're talking a mega update for a high end phone ...
Rant rant rant

I'm new to the Vodafone forums but thought I'd share my experience with ya!
I rooted my Magic a couple of months back and had been playing with the HTC Hero firmware but when the 1.6 update was released in America a very well know developers site had the firmware available to install on rooted phones. It was firmware released by HTC for Google branded Ion phones and was the final firmware.
I installed it on my rooted Magic and it all went fine and I was running 1.6 Donut. A couple of days ago I got an update message saying I could update to 1.6 (meaning I'd lose root). I am still using my Voda sim so this might show that Google sends out the updates not Vodafone. Hope this helps!

Indeed there does. I've always thought of Vodafone as being the slightly more expensive, but better choice of carrier. I can't quite believe that none of you can give a solid answer as to who/how the update gets released, even after days/weeks of faffing around.
What a farce

google push the update to "with google" handsets (most likely through the handset's internet connection)
the question we are trying to get an answer to is;
do vodafone instruct google to push the update to vodafone handsets?
google dev says that it is down to vodafone to tell them when to push the update to vodafone (with google) handsets.
vodafone mods on here say that google send the update and it has nothing to do with vodafone.
only one of them can be correct. we are trying to find out which one.
when this has been figured out, we can then try and find out when the update will be pushed...
@ Gawler
thanks for the input, but as your phone is rooted and is running custom firmware it doesn't really help with this situation.

1) I spoke to two advisors today who were confident the device management team passed a message internally that their is definetly an update and it's due at the end of October
2) They say the people responsible for sending out the OTA update is HTC themselves
So now thats a 3rd company that could provide us the update ............. take your pick which one it is loool
PICNIC
P.s whoever said theirs probably no more "with Google" phones well have a look at the Samsung moment here

it'd still be nice to hear something officially from vodafone about this.
CS advisers could easily be making this up to fob you off (they're good at that sort of thing...)
them telling you that the update comes from HTC sounds iffy to me since somebody from google has already confirmed that they (google) push the update - although there's no way of knowing if the google android dev knows for sure either... but if he was going to lie then he'd probably have passed the buck onto someone else.
a press release would be nice (and give vodafone lots of free publicity, as it's bound to get posted all over the web on all the phone/gadget/tech sites)

HTC in aggrement with Google decides on the timing of upgrade.
Also, as I daid b4 this phone can be used on any network and everyone gets update so updates are not just carried on VF's network it is available for all phones irrespective of networks.

I just rang HTC aswell and the Man had told me that they do not push the update it's Vodafone's Modified ROM on a HTC handset , so it's them I need to contact {which we already have}. I'm going around in circles I suppose it's simply best to leave it and simply wait and see as were getting no-where
So guys and Girls ........Sit back.............relax.......... and Watch your Donut {very slowly}.........roll in

Well done and thank you for the hard work mate. Seems to be another case of ###### & elbow! At least someone is trying.
P.S. The Samsung Moment looked nice - shame it will be crippled by the operators.
