I've been doing a lot of thinking about this and was waiting to see what the Nexus One would deliver before I made up my mind. Strangely I seem to have done a bit of a u-turn and the decision I've come to has surprised me a bit. I think that I'm going to go with the iPhone. Main reasons:
- Luke-warm Nexus One reviews and no real USP for me.
- The eBook apps for iPhone are much better.
- I'm sick of being bleeding edge. I want something that's stable and works.
- I can integrate straight off with iTunes, yeah I know this can all be got around but it would be nice to plug the thing in type "Rufass' iPhone" and the job's a good 'un. Plus it will be able to handle all the DRM protected Apple stuff we've got.
The speed of the processor doesn't really make any difference to me, the iPhone processor seems fast enough for the thing to do what it's supposed to. The main thing I will miss I think (apart from the notionally cool open-source OS and Apps) will be the free Google turn-based Sat Nav. That's a real selling point for me.
Quick, persuade me not to do it!
It's not an iPhone for starters therefore the world and his dog won't have one.
This thing is backed by Google directly, think about that, they're going to make this work come hell or high water. Any software updates should in theory be pushed out to the handset very quickly as it runs stock android rather than a manufacturers UI (eg Sense). Therefore you'll get all of the improvements almost as soon as they happen. Given Android's relativey short time in existence it's seen quite a few updates so I'd say this is an important feature.
It has a very good 5mp camera which has universally won praise on the few reviews out there. This is something of a watershed moment for Android phones which have so far underwhelmed in this area.
If you refer to the link in my earlier post for the pocketlint article it states that Voda will be offering a 'subsidised' handset in the UK within just a few weeks. That would suggest that the units will ship from here in the UK and direct from Voda rather than the states so no import tax? Correct me if I'm wrong mods?
Processor speed does not a great phone make but at least the tech is current. There's nothing wrong with the iPhone but it's based on almost 3 year old specs now (admittedly with some good improvements for the 3GS). Give it a year and I think the iPhone will start to look a bit dated whereas the NXS1 is in good shape for a while yet.
Think of the FREE sat nav!!
