VF S8 not updating

I have a S8 - that VF/insurance replaced in November. The original one updated regularly and I had no issues, until an unfortunate drop put the screen out of action.

It's still running the Firmware I received it with (build date Feb 2018!)- it can't find any updates, despite all the sources saying there should be something newer (I'm not expecting Pie, although that would be nice...)

my CSC version is G950FOXM1CRAP (yes, the irony isn't lost)

Any clues as to what to do?

Did the previous one have an update later than that?   If not, it's possible that the model has reached the end of its update cycle and what you have is the latest version available.   I believe it's possible to set devices not to receive updates, although I doubt that this would be ones supplied for general use.

If this is effectively a fault, it sould be possible to get the repair centre to flash a more recent version of the firmware.  Hang on for the forum team who'll be able to check.

Thanks. yes - the old device had a much newer version of the firmware. Also, searching the net it seems as if there's been several revisions of that particular code since.

(G950FXXU1CRB7 also seems to come up as my PDA/bootloader version) - these version codes mean very little to me...

this site seems to indicate there's been several releases since (I'd prefer to update through official channels though...) https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s8/SM-G950F/VOD/

I'd certainly agree to update via the phones software update section and not use a custom rom as this can lead to another set of new issues occasionally.

I see no reason why the Samsung s8 wouldn't get Samsung One Ui  / Pie as it's been pushed out by Samsung to its unbranded phones.

See samsung.com/t5/Galaxy-S9-S9/One-UI-Pie-Release-UK-amp-Ireland.

Vodafone wouldn't comment on firmware timeframes.

Yeah - I'm crossing fingers that Pie happens on time.

Until then, I would be nice to have security software somewhat newer than Feb 2018, though...

If it's a Vodafone-supplied device, you'd only get the updates they've approved and those would typically run behind SIM-Free devices.   However, due to their popularity, Samsung devices are generally better served than some other brands.

You've confirmed that your original device had updates that this one hasn't and that needs to be addressed.  The forum team will get to this thread in due course and should be able to advise.   I'm pretty sure it'll need another trip to the repair shop, but they may be able to help with what you need to say to get the right thing done.   Once you've got it updating, you should get Pie when it's released.

@srzavfuk

Have a look to see if the security patch update is ready for your phone and not attached to a firmware update.

To look its something similar to > Settings > Lock Screen and security > Other Security Settings > Security Policy Updates.

Samsung Galaxy s²³ Ultra 512gb Phantom Black.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll get on to them to check it out.

Yup, the security updates say 1 Feb 18, and no updates available...

Same in here. I have S8 since July 2017 and my last update was Feb 2018. Exactly same CRAP one.  Spoke to Vodafone customer support about 5 times, and they just lie to me that Samsung did't push the updates yet! What a load of crap. People get security updates every month, people even got Android Pie on Vodafone on S8! Easier talk to a wall than to Vodafone customer support. Can't wait the contract to finish and will ditch this Vodafone for good. Waste of time. First and last contract with Vodafone.

How you guys got around this issue? DId anyone manage to get the update from Vodafone?

@liopik It's a strange to hear you've been unable to update your device since last year,  I understand how frustrating and unsatisfying this must be. Usually we only delay future software updates, as we test it thoroughly to make sure it provides the best experience on our network - you can view more information on this here

As you've been unable to do this for a period of time, to make sure there's isn't fault with your device I'd recommend taking it to our Technical Specialists, in one of your nearest Vodafone stores. They'll be able to examine your phone and determine whether it needs to be sent off for repair or even help you get this sorted themselves.
