I have had my M8 for just over a week now and I love it. I do however have a problem with the notification LED on the front of the phone not working when I receive a text message or similar. So far I have done the following:
Gone to Settings > Display and gestures > Notification light and ensured that all of the boxes are ticked
Opened HTC Guide, clicked Support > Phone Health (Diagnostics) > Hardware diagnostics > LED test and the test runs successfully
Booted the phone into Safe Mode and run the LED diagnostic test which was successful
When the phone is charging the LED is orange and stays on (although dimmer than I would have expected) and when the battery is fully charged the LED is green and steady (again dimmer than I would have expected).
When I lock my phone and the screen is off and I send myself a text message from another phone I can hear that the message is received but the notification LED never lights up.
I have Googled this problem and it has been reported by other people and some have managed to resolve it by performing a factory reset of the phone and then resinstalling apps one by one rather than using the automated restore function. I am very reluctant to do this if there is an alternative method to fix this as it has taken me hours to get the phone set up and working the way that I want it.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks

I did the reset last night and manually reinstalled the apps from the Play store rather than alowing the automated restore process to run and it has fixed the problem. The LED now appears to be working normally. The only downside is the whole process took 2.5 hours :smileyfrustrated:

Hi All,
I have been having the same issues with my new HTC M8.
I fixed the problem on my phone by following method...
Go into Settings --> ... More --> Default SMS app --> Select Messages.
This method fixed it..
If you want to use Google 'Hangouts' (Pretty Good App) as your default sms app then select Hangouts... Note --> Here you need to gointo Hangout Settings to activate notications.
Hope this solves the issue for you all.

Nope. Nothing is working.
I'll wait for the update.

When is this update? as i say my Led Lights up when charging only. so not like it is not working.

There is no update that anyone would know about. If the LED isn't working as it should there are two possibilities - either a software glitch or a hardware fault.
If it's a software fault that could be resolved with a factory reset. If the hardware is broken it needs a repair.

i did a factory reset long and drawn out an still no luck.
i am annoyed as if it is a problem and needs repairing it is the customer that has to be inconvenienced waiting for phone to be repaired etc. seems no answer to this simple thing on this phone...

If it's broken it's broken - what other answer than a repair could there be?
You should decide whether or not it's worth being without the phone for however long it takes to repair it for something relatively minor.

its a common problem with this HTC phone so should be doing something to get a fix.
this is HTC widespread fault, i dont want to take it to get repaired as it not broken just a feature thats not working on a lot of phones, not serious but annoying

I see no particular evidence that it's a common fault with this phone. I have an M8 and I read extensively about phones and I'm not aware of this problem being any more widespread than with other phones.
But yes it is annoying in the extreme.
Have you tried downloading one of the many apps on the Play Store that control LED notifications to see if they work on your phone?

yep i have thanks and still no luck.
i read on some forums it was a common fault so dont really know.
probably just have to live with it.
thanks for your feedback
