I have studied the advanced user guide and tried a lot of things but I am stumped on how to configure the R215 to allow VOIP to work.
If I disable NAT my Nokia C3-01 will connect to draytel as long as it is the first device to connect to the Wi-Fi, subsequent devices that connect get no internet access which is not much good.
I tried setting the DMZ address to the phones IP address but that did not work.
I get the impression that there is some sort of firewall configured that I cannot disable properly. I just want it to work the same as my D100 router. Although the R215 has a USB connection it does not work as a modem when attached to the D100 so that workaround is no good, but if it can be made to work I will be happy. Currently my R215 is just a paperweight while I struggle on with 3G with its measly 300Kb upload speed.
Any assistance will be most welcome because I would rather use the R215 than have to take it back because it does not work.

You shouldn't need to configure the R215. We just need to check your account to make sure that VOIP is enabled.
I've sent you a private message with details on how to get in touch.
For anyone else with the same issue, try the steps listed here and if you’re still affected, contact customer service

Hi Sukhi
Thank you for responding.
Not sure why this should be account specific, the SIM works with VOIP in other hardware (D100 router with E160G 3G dongle) - just not the R215.
I suppose that the R215 could be dynamically configured remotely by account type - is this the case? I was told in the shop when I signed up that nothing is blocked and I specifically mentioned I need VOIP.
I will pop in to the Tango technical centre some time this week again and see what they say.

The R215 should be configured correctly when purchased and if the SIM works in other devices it's not account specific.
We'll be happy to take a look in our repair centre which can be arranged through our Vodafone repairs thread.

Just an update to progress. I have visited the Tango technical centre and they have tried a few things but cannot get anywhere so they have escalated it. It would appear that I am the first person to be using VOIP which rather surprises me a little. I am still awaiting a call from the technical person after a week but have been assured someone will phone.
The only thing I have noticed is that the equipment that works (Hauwei D100 router and E160G dongle) is configured for dynamic APN while the R215 does not appear to have a dynamic APN option. Perhaps that is what I need or perhaps an APN setting that has not been tried yet. Do I perhaps need new firmware that supports dynamic APN? Might just be a red herring. Perhaps the original Hauwei firmware will offer some more configuration options.
I cannot see that sending my R215 away to a repair centre is going to help much unless someone has an R215 that actually works with VOIP somewhere. It is easy to test - just install x-lite free VOIP app and sign up for a free VOIP account at Draytel. I don't really want to waste time on futile activities when I am sure the solution will be quite simple (new firmware/correct APN setting/etc.).

@pharman We’ll need to check everything’s all enabled correctly on your account to be able to help further.
Did you get in touch with us on the private message Sukhi sent you?
If you did, please let me know the email [#10123456] reference and we’ll be happy to check on this?

@Sarah
I have been working with the Tango technical centre (local outlet) so far which I felt was the most practical of the options @Sukhi suggested.
I think I might be getting to the root of the problem though, it appears that the R215 implements SIP ALS which modifies SIP packets when working through a NAT firewall on the router. It appears that some implementations of this do not identify when a connection is already NAT-aware and corrupt the SIP packets, and it looks like the R215 is one of these implementations.
If I could turn off the SIP ALS it would probably work OK. I have tried switching off the NAT proxy settings in the SIP clients on my Symbian phone and X-lite app and this does enable connections to work which implies that there is some (undocumented) SIP NAT awareness built in to the R215, but unfortunately the SIP registration and connection are a bit hit and miss making it still unuseable.
It would be nice if someone who understands the R215 a bit better than me could work out if it is possible to configure the R215 to disable the SIP ALS or if it is possible to work out the client settings that are required in the SIP clients to connect to Draytel while working through the R215.
I think I am getting somewhere, but not there yet.

@pharman Great to see that you’ve done some further investigation.
As advised, if you can let me know if you’ve emailed us and we can help further too.
Thanks,
Sarah
