If I opt OUT of roam-further £5/day, how much do calls and texts to the UK cost?

I believe I can opt out, and since I only text once every few days whilst I'm away, I won't want to spend £5 a go to do that!  If I make a phone call it's because it's unavoidable, and would only last a few seconds.  I've searched for call/text charges but can't find them anywhere.  I just keep getting bombarded by the new roam-further £5/day charges.  Can anyone help please?

@dscha

If your itemised usage shows absolutely no other activity on the days in question, apart from receiving texts, then it sounds like you've been charged in error, and CS or Live Chat should be able to arrange a refund to your account. You didn't accidentally switch on mobile data? I managed to do that in the US a couple of years ago, and a few seconds cost me, so I went on and used more data in the rest of the day, to get some value out of my mistake.

Sorry, missed your statement that they had sorted it for you! If you find that it continues to happen, then there may be some error trapped in your account, and you need to ask to have it investigated.

Hi,

no data was on. The CS said that it gets triggered even with receiving text messagees or calls, any activity.

So what is correct. now???

Thanks

dmscha

To clarify: data was switched off

Hi, receiving does not trigger, that is 100% correct, see the post above by @chistery to show what does.

Thanks for the quick reply. That is good news.

Same for receiving calls then? Only roaming charges when i receive a call, no 5 pounds charge?

then the question is: why does the CS representative, who called me after my complaint, does not know this and gives incorrect information?

@dscha, see https://www.vodafone.co.uk/explore/costs/travelling-abroad/global-roaming/

Roam-further

Travelling further afield? You’ll pay just £5 a day to use your home plan of data, minutes and texts in our 60 Roam-further destinations [PDF: 810KB] – and you’ll be charged only on the days you use your phone. What’s more, receiving calls and texts is free. So if you only take calls or read texts on any given day, you won’t incur the £5 charge.

Just to make it absolutely clear, in case anyone is confused - Roam-further only applies to Pay Monthly, not to PAYG.

My OH, who like me is a PAYG customer, had seen the TV ad a few times, and been amused by the character, but took it at face value, and was very indignant to realise that it wouldn't apply to him. I explained, firstly that there was some small print in the ad, and secondly that for many non-European destinations the costs of roaming would be falling considerably as from 5th August.

Though, as far as I'm aware, in all destinations there is no charge for receiving a text - not even in 'Airlines and Maritime'!

Just back from 3 weeks USA (Alaska) and Canada and caught out by the £5 a day charge, despite only sending on some days one text on others 3. These are famiy (includes my elderley father age 80 who only does text).  Vodafone CS says no opt out and people like it . Well at £75 for 10 texts that's unacceptable and I do not like it. I had this many years ago with Euro Traveller and opted out. They say its OFCOM regs but I think it is crazy not to allow opt out as over many years I was willing to pay 75p per text and us WiFi but now apparently we all have to like full roaming.I have to wait for my bill before I can complai n apparently!!! Anyone else been caught out by this daylight robbery?

@twinepa
Well, maybe it's an Ofcom regulation, but it's the first I've heard of it.
I'm sure there are plenty of people not at all happy with the situation. An
option you might consider is taking a PAYG phone with you on such travels,
as there's no £5 a day charge, you just pay as you go!
