VDSL UK High Latency

Hi there,

I haven't noticed any performance issues until recently. Lately I have noticed a latency increase with my broadband service at certain times. I've restarted my router and can confirm nothing else is causing the spikes, no big downloads, and like tonight just myself using it. I noticed this when playing online games and I normally see a 24ms ping time, and it prompted me to do some testing. I did various traceroutes and ping tests and they ranged between 56-98ms.

Sample traceroute tonight to BBC:

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [151.101.0.81]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 2 ms 2 ms 2 ms vodafone.connect [192.168.1.1]
2 58 ms 65 ms 66 ms host-212-158-250-32.dslgb.com [212.158.250.32]
3 59 ms 59 ms 61 ms 63.130.140.122
4 65 ms 62 ms 56 ms ae15-xcr1.slo.cw.net [195.2.2.217]
5 67 ms 68 ms 64 ms ae21-xcr1.hex.cw.net [195.2.8.233]
6 * 68 ms 65 ms lag-10.ear1.London1.Level3.net [4.68.72.93]
7 61 ms 55 ms 53 ms ae-1-3112.edge6.London1.Level3.net [4.69.141.246]
8 55 ms 56 ms 56 ms 149.11.166.202
9 64 ms 62 ms 62 ms 151.101.0.81

It looks to be this where there is some sort of congestion?

2 58 ms 65 ms 66 ms host-212-158-250-32.dslgb.com [212.158.250.32]

I can confirm the same issue tonight. Please can someone from Vodafone assist, as i'm not getting anywhere with live chat.

@Jack9127 Thanks for getting in touch, I'm sorry to hear you've started having these issues recently.

Are you getting these latency problems on a Wi-Fi connection, or is this happening on a wired connection too? What's your current sync speed?

The best team to contact would be our Broadband team, so they can run diagnostics on your line either via Live Chat or on the phone 08080 034 515. They'll also run through some home checks with you to test your equipment.

Please keep us updated and let us know what they advise. Don't hesitate to pop back us if you're still having problems, we'll be happy to forward your query to our Broadband Complaints team.

Hi there TJ,

This is using a wired connection. I have gone to live chat and I've been advised it's gone to a level 2 Technician? No matter how many times I reconnect the router, I always reconnect to the same dslgb server. Some days it's OK but most often as of late there is high latency. I have attached the router stats as requested and a traceroute tonight showing how bad it gets.

Regards,

Jack

@Jack9127 Thanks for providing us with those details.

I know some of these may seem very simple, but I just wanted to run through some questions to complete as much troubleshooting as possible:

- Have you recently added any additional devices that could be using up extra bandwidth?

- Are you currently using the Vodafone router, or are you using a third party router?

It sounds like our Live Chat team have forwarded your query on to our Technical team for further investigation. Please continue to keep us updated and let us know what they advise.

Hi there,

I can confirm no other devices are using the connection, it has been fine for months until the past 4-5 weeks. For example bandwidth isn't the issue, and the speedtest result I pasted confirms (but again high latency). I'm using the router Vodafone supplied. I'm still waiting to hear back from the Level 2 team and as of now still the same issue:

Pinging bbc.co.uk [151.101.192.81] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 151.101.192.81: bytes=32 time=142ms TTL=54
Reply from 151.101.192.81: bytes=32 time=143ms TTL=54
Reply from 151.101.192.81: bytes=32 time=141ms TTL=54
Reply from 151.101.192.81: bytes=32 time=152ms TTL=54

I have a friend who is also on Vodafone Broadband and his latency last night was 13ms. As such because I constantly connect to the same server (host-212-158-250-32.dslgb.com), I can't escape it. It's as though too many people are using it, and I'm suffering because of it.

Hi there.

Please can this be escalated to the broadband complaints department. I got a text today saying my fault has been fixed and it certainly hasn't (FLT08486505). I'm kind of stuck here I'm not really getting any assistance and this needs to be fixed.

Tonight:

Pinging bbc.co.uk [151.101.192.81] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 151.101.192.81: bytes=32 time=91ms TTL=54
Reply from 151.101.192.81: bytes=32 time=98ms TTL=54
Reply from 151.101.192.81: bytes=32 time=98ms TTL=54
Reply from 151.101.192.81: bytes=32 time=78ms TTL=54

It's that bad tonight I have had it, I would have hoped by posting in the forums I would have had some sort of help where UK based investigation teams could assist. Live chat said to me tonight that 90ms pings to UK servers isn't excessive and no fault on the line, what a cop out excuse.

At my own cost of nearly £250+ early termination fees, I'm now in the process leaving you because of the rubbish service and going elsewhere. No credible help on here when it was needed, no help on live chat, USA style latency to UK servers, 200ms+ latency to continental Europe how is that deemed acceptable?

Unfortunately you'll find the same attitude to any other provider unless they have an offer "for gamers".

Latency is something that only who play online at something a pinch more serious than facebook games, knows something about.

I'm having the same issue with sky broadband (actually I'm having latency around 500msec and packet loss around 20% in every test) but for them it's not something on the contract so it's not something they care about.

I come from italy and we do have a couple of companies that offer gamers contracts (fastweb, telecom to name a couple) and honestly I'm surprised I don't see any of those offers in UK.
