Latency gone from 5-6 to 16-17ms 900mb slow download!

jalzoo
4: Newbie

For some reason my latency has gone up 10ms from 5-6 to 16-17ms. Can't understand why traceroutes are all look the same as before nobody is downloading on my network i'm hardwired in not using wifi. When getting FTTP i expected low latency as cityfiber seem to advertise on their website. Ive had much lower latency using non FTTP isps this is not what i expected at all. 16-17ms may not sound like much but why would it suddenly jump up from 5-6?. Can't wait to leave vodafone counting down the days to my contract ending!!.  Ive done all the usual protocols reboot the router reboot the ONT just the same. I get between 9ms and 100+ ms to my local gateway it's rather high for the second hop.

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms RT-AX86S-9360 [192.168.1.1]
2 84 ms 75 ms 69 ms 90.247.192.1
3 15 ms 15 ms 15 ms 63.130.105.110
4 15 ms 16 ms 15 ms 90.255.251.119
5 17 ms 15 ms 16 ms 151.101.0.81

Internet speed is also taken a hit the download is only 100-200mbps

Thanks for reaching out to us @jalzoo - what did the Gigafast team advise when you spoke to them? Have you noticed any difference with your service since the latency has increased?

The service is getting worse. I got disconnect from the live chat now for some reason I'm unable to get on to live chat it wont work, getting pretty fed up. Don't like ringing.

It just says "Your case has been picked up by one of our agents. If you need more information, get in touch with us." when i click chat now nothing happens.

Internet speed using vodafone servers is 900mbps+ using speedtest from all other uk servers is less than 10mbps:

Wait until you speak to the absolute melt in charge at city fibre.

He believes a ping of upto 150ms is normal for residential broadband.

I've complained about my pings doubling. They recently just increased to 15ms.

This service was amazing when our pings were only 6ms

What's frustrating is the issue lies with city fibre, not Vodafone.  However, city fibre won't talk to mere mortal customers.

WOW 150ms i had a better ping then that in the year 2000 on NTL!!. I find it quite annoying they don't acknowledge there is a fault on their part especially considering they pride themselves on "Ultra low latency network" i see those facebook ads.

Don't understand what could possibly be happening on their end for the gradual increase over time feels like im back on VDSL again scared to reboot just incase you loose your sync speed lol

Hi @jalzoo and @purrbox I understand how important it is to have a stable connection, especially now. If you are on Gigasfast or Pro Broadband I advise speaking with our dedicated team on 191 (from a Vodafone number) or 0333 304 0191 (from an alternative number), or via livechat.

If you are on our Superfast service please drop us a message on social media so that we can look into your speeds. Make sure to include a link back to this forum post, your forum username and your landline/account number to save you repeating yourself.

What latency should I get via ethernet?  Mine is regularly at 11ms, not much better than VM coax.

My connection looks nice and clean though.

I suppose it all depends on where you are in the country you are windlown. The closer to london you are the better

your latency will be. Some people on here complained about their latency being similar to ours then waking up one morning to find it had dropped to 2-3ms that is how i imagine fiber optic ping to be. If your connection is solid having an 11ms latency is absolutely fine. Just if you compare to some other FTTP companies they seem to be able to give much lower.

I'm in Coventry. The default test server from here is Vodafone Watford

Here's a trace done, just now, to the BBC. If that is the kind of performance we get en route to games servers we shouldn't complain.

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [151.101.0.81]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms vodafone.broadband [192.168.1.1]
2 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms 90.246.0.1
3 8 ms 9 ms 8 ms 63.130.104.202
4 8 ms 7 ms 8 ms 90.255.251.119
5 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms 151.101.0.81

Call of Duty gets me a ping of 18.

Black ops 19
