Latency gone from 5-6 to 16-17ms 900mb slow download!

For some reason my latency has gone up 10ms from 5-6 to 16-17ms. Can't understand why traceroutes are all look the same as before nobody is downloading on my network i'm hardwired in not using wifi. When getting FTTP i expected low latency as cityfiber seem to advertise on their website. Ive had much lower latency using non FTTP isps this is not what i expected at all. 16-17ms may not sound like much but why would it suddenly jump up from 5-6?. Can't wait to leave vodafone counting down the days to my contract ending!!.  Ive done all the usual protocols reboot the router reboot the ONT just the same. I get between 9ms and 100+ ms to my local gateway it's rather high for the second hop.

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms RT-AX86S-9360 [192.168.1.1]

4 15 ms 16 ms 15 ms 90.255.251.119
5 17 ms 15 ms 16 ms 151.101.0.81

Internet speed is also taken a hit the download is only 100-200mbps

I want to be assured of getting the 900Mb up/down that I pay for and a consistently low ping. I have requested a static IP.

Finally, I have got what I pay for,  a symmetrical connection that includes  900Mb, low latency broadband. It has taken a week of calls and online chats to get an order in for a static IP that, for now, appears to be using a route with less weak links.

Downstream = 943.6Mb  Upstream = 941.5Mb  Ping = 6ms.

Now I will shut up.

Solved a major billing gripe at the same time.  Why have I missed out on £35.00 discount?

Test One:

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [151.101.128.81]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms vodafone.broadband [192.168.1.1]
2 3 ms 3 ms 3 ms 84.65.192.1
3 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms 63.130.105.110
4 12 ms 11 ms 11 ms 90.255.251.117
5 6 ms 7 ms 6 ms 151.101.128.81

Trace complete.

Test Two:

Tracing route to one.one.one.one [1.1.1.1]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms vodafone.broadband [192.168.1.1]
2 3 ms 3 ms 3 ms 84.65.192.1
3 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms 63.130.105.110
4 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms 90.255.251.37
5 6 ms 7 ms 7 ms 162.158.32.11
6 7 ms 6 ms 6 ms one.one.one.one [1.1.1.1]

Trace complete.

That is pretty satisfactory.   average 5ms or less.

The last 24 hours shows that my static IP connection is working well with speed tests >900Mb up and downstream and low latency at 6ms  24/7. One incident though.

My thinkbroadband quality monitor shows two outages. The first was me rebooting the router yesterday, but the second was a longer outage initiated by VF in the small hours.  I guess it was deliberate because because of its timing. Can we assume upgrade work or fault busting?  That's fine, but I hope it isn't a regular occurrence because I run a free Plex media server for a small group of friends and family , some of whom live in different time zones. Such outages interrupt streaming.

The router rebooting in the early hours is usually it getting a firmware update. Did you have a note of what it was before to see if it has changed?

That is the same as I have, and my router upgraded a couple of weeks ago, so it should be a while before there is another one.

This one is for you Windlown

My third hop IP address resolves to NEW YORK CITY 63.130.127.221

Very strange 🤣

63.130.127.221   North America it is! or is it?

Given that light would normally take 26ms to do the journey to North America, we have to be impressed with 7ms for that hop.  🤣
