Like many of you I'm fairly sure that Vodafone are throttling certain types of traffic, including video streaming services.


I only realised recently that is a speed test site that shows you accurate data on the streaming speeds you can get on Netflix, as it uses the same CDN servers used by Netflix video streams.


I'd really appreciate other forum members posting their speed results for to see if anyone is getting the sort of speeds they should be. A comparison speed test result against a server would also be great.


My results as of right now: - 4.0Mbps (Bytemark Hosting, York) - 32.9Mbps

A lot are suffering. My current speeds :


Single speed test on Speedtest :

Normal site : To Vodafone London, around 10Mbps, to the same one as you in York, 48 Mbps.. - I get 3.2Mbps

'Syncing' at 55Mbps

But apparently with the screenshots Ive sent in, there is no problem and they refuse to pass it to the next level of technicians

My location -Devon (just in case it helps as stevex has suggested further down) and have been having a problem with this since around November last year - up until then (about 12 months, it was flawless)

FWIW I don't think Vodafone are throttling certain type of traffic everywhere. I think certain routes across VF based on geographical location are congested and are much slower as a result.  So perhaps if you send a message to this thread you can give a rough idea of your location too?


I have friends who get full speed at, one is near Coventry the other in Leominster.


I'm in North Wales near Rhyl and currently get (downloads only). 4.2Mbps

When using on Vodafone broadband, it knows via your IP address that you are on Vodafone and gives you CDN servers that are best suited to you.

You can see which servers it gives you by calling this API:


You should be given 5 servers: (manchester) - (birmingham) - (bracknell) -

2x random London servers at an Internet Exchange.


The first 3 servers are all hosted directly on vodafone's network - those 3 IPs are owned by Vodafone (see for example).

My route to these servers couldn't be much better:

The first hop is obviously my router.

The second hop is my modem's gateway.

The third is a part of Vodafone's core network infrastructure - any tracert I do goes through this router, or others in the range 63.130.*.*


Tracerts to the other 2 vodafone CDN servers show similar routing, just with different addresses on the 3rd hop - presumably those are core routers at the Vodafone sites Manchester, Birmingham and Bracknell respectively.


I consistently get poor speed test results from these servers (as well as the London ones) which to me show pretty conclusively that Vodafone is throttling this traffic

I guess it makes sense that Vodafone would only throttle traffic in areas of high network congestion, and would explain why there arn't complaints from a lot more people on here.


Would be nice to see some other results on here of people that arn't having any problems.

I've been doing some tests with a friend in Leamington Spa who gets full speed from

I use Firefox which parses out the returned list nicely. I get 5 URLs which are Bimingham, Manchester, London, London and Amsterdam. My friend gets the same.

The firefox screen also gives some URLs with 25MB files behind them. You can click on them and check the download speeds as it goes. The London ones in the list for me downloads at very roughly 300-400kB/s with my friend it happens too fast for her to see the results.

The hostname the files are download from is

We both performed a tracert on that hostname. I get this:

My update didn't appear for some reason. I did an additional test with my friend to try and rule out as much as possible. We used the same URL from Manchester site on to download a file.  I get 200-300kB/s and she gets about 1.5MB/s. The two tracert results are almost identical.

For me:

For my friend:

As you can see only #2 differs.

Now here's the thing. Every route I try goes through yet in some cases (like above) it is slow and others it is fast. So what the heck is going on?

When I was downloading the files directly I was getting 80KB/s to 130KB/s depending which server I used.


Those second hops (range 212.158.250.*) are the gateway of your dsl modem - if you look on your router config you can see it in there. I guess everyone in a certain region has the same gateway?


The third hop (range 63.130.*.*) appears to be core routers in different regions. Almost all my traffic (to bbc, most speedtest servers etc) goes via


I'm guessing that all Vodafone customers in certain regions have traffic shaping applied, and customers in other regions have none.


Would be quite useful to find out what other people in this forum have as their modems gateway, and also where they are located.

Not just streaming - some activity is poor, e.g. directly d/l Microsoft ISOs 24/7

Most of the time I can find some service/speedtest etc that will max the line.

Hillarious that VF are saying don't use as it has "issues", funny then that I can get 80-100Mbps out of it from a Virgin Business line at work, but 1-4Mbps using the VF connection at home.......
