Asus AX88U router

Hi all,

Recently switched to Voda from Virgin media and getting non-stop problems connecting my Xbox series X via wired connection.

I've read the thread about using a switch to solve the problem but I was wondering if I could use my Asus AX88U router instead somehow?

With virgin it was easy to put their router into modem mode but from what I've read the THG3000 can't do that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

@L8N  There's a long discussion about using own routers on this forum.

You haven't said if you are on FTTP or FTTC.

If you are on FTTP, I would definately say use the ASUS, but you will lose easy access to the phone service, if that is important to you.

A cheap switch is about £10.00, not a bad price if it solves your problem, but not making us of the ASUS seems a real waste.

Yes, you could use the ASUS as a switch, but that would really be a crime.

An alternative would be to switch vodafone's wifi off and connect the asus router's WAN to a lan port on the vf router. It's not ideal if you're a heavy gamer though the double NAT may work fine for you. And you'll keep the phone connection. Worth a try at least.

We have 'Full Fibre 500' so I assume that's FTTP? I'm not sure.

Not too fussed about the phone line, it never gets used at all.

Then just get your PPPoE details from Vodafone, and do away with the Vodafone router completely. (keep it just in case you have a fault and Vodafone want to to put it back on.

Use live chat for the PPPoE details. https://www.vodafone.co.uk/bbservcd/

Hi there,

So I got the same question as the OP. I am moving from VM to Vodafone and getting the full fibre 500 package.

Currently have an Asus ax88u that I use as my main router, my Vodafone is going to be installed today. Noticed that the Vodafone router connects to the internet via the DSL phone line?

How then do you get rid of the Vodafone router and replace with the Asus as the Asus doesn't accept internet through a telephone cable?

You'll be getting Full Fibre 500, which is fibre right into your home - no need for a dsl modem as your router's WAN will connect directly to the ONT.

Hey there,

Thanks for that, I only realised after they installed the white box that I connect directly with ethernet :Smiling:

I've managed to set up my AX88U as the main point for internet, though... I've found the WIFI speeds to be pretty crap, around 140Mbps, vs the 400-500Mbps via ethernet that my PC is plugged into.

The standard Vodafone modem delivered 400-500Mbps on Wifi compared to my Asus router.

Is this a common issue? I've read a couple of threads of some people complaining about slow Wifi speeds, though just wondering if there was a fix or anything for it?

140Mbps sounds like you're connecting to the 2.4Ghz wifi. If Smart Connect is enabled then disable it, give each band it's own SSID, and connect to the 5Ghz band.
