I have just assisted an elderly lady in moving from TalkTalk to Vodafone because TalkTalk were unable to provide her with a service that came close to her guaranteed minimum speed of 11mbps - her routers were connecting at max 4mbps.
During the testing of the 3 routers supplied by TalkTalk there was NEVER a problem with her connecting to the Wifi - she lives in a small flat and is less than 30 feet from the router.
After her Vodafone service had been installed, she called me to say that she could not use her new Vodafone broadband service - HELP.
When I arrived at her flat, I noticed that the WiFi signal was so weak that the laptop was frequently dropping the connection.
I took the laptop to the router and was able to connect and see that the speed of the new broadband was an amazing 51mbps.
However, returning the laptop to her dining room table, resulted in a very weak signal again - sometimes unusable.
I checked the configuration of the router in expert mode and made a few changes that MIGHT improve the situation, but they did not.
In expert mode there is a WiFi analyser, so I selected 2.4g and the results were ... The strongest 2.4ghz signal was from BT and TalkTalk routers and ranged from -52db to -64db. When I looked for the Vodafone signal strength, it was number 12 on the list with a strength of -86db.
Little surprise then that she has a problem. A Vodafone engineer suggested doing a factory reset of the router - which he did. It made NO difference.
This lady has now been told that she might need one or two wifi boosters for which she will have to pay extra. She is waiting for one to arrive and I will then go over and assist with their setup.
HOW CAN THIS BE RIGHT???
This router is less than 30 feet away and she has NEVER had a wifi strength problem before!
I have advised that I can install a third party router which will solve her problem, but why should this be necessary?
She is very upset at all of this and, quite rightly, wants a simple solution that works!
Of course, as the service has just been installed and has always been unusable, she is free to cancel the Vodafone service and move, maybe to Sky?

Hi @wiz2003 - thanks for taking your time to help and also explain to us what's happening with the connection. We'd don't want to make anyone feel the way you've described the lady feeling. So that we can go through live tests on the line again, please ask the account holder to go through the steps here - You'll then be connected to an agent if needed.

The Wi-Fi analyser in the router cannot report on it's own Wi-Fi signal. If it is seeing a Vodafone SSID, it's either someone else's or a repeater.

Well, there was no repeater and the SSID was the same as the router...
Those figures tallied with wifiman on my android.
