I topped up with £10 credit, but it seems to have just disappeared without my knowledge as to how it's gone. Therefore I can only make emergency calls only on my phone at the moment. I hadn't even sent a text or made any phone calls. How did this happen...?

The first thing that springs to mind is the credit has gone towards an opted into Big Value Bundle or there is a delay adding the credit to your account.
The best way to find the information you need on where your credit has gone will be your online account or the My Vodafone phone application, both will give details or active PAYG bundles. If you have a bundle, you will find the bundle starting at midnight tonight, this may be the reason you are unable to use your phone.
