Question about Vodafone PC dongle

SteveHigh
4: Newbie

Hello

Two questions if possible about this dongle (for use on my wireless desktop PC):

http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/cart/cart.jsp?bundleSkuId=sku48217625&planSkuId=sku105586&dlAction=a...

If I were to buy the dongle, how do I know how much of the 4Gb/£20 has been used? I might use all of it in a week or manage to spread it out over 4 weeks, but how would I monitor/know that, please?

Also, what is the £20 'up front'. Is that what I pay in advance of receiving the dongle and then use that £20 to access the Internet?

Thank you.

Steve

It's 4G rather than 4GB!

You'll find details of keeping track of your usage on https://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Mobile-Broadband/Data-Useage-on-the-new-Vodaphone-MI-FI/m-p/2603523

If you go back from the basket to choice of product - https://www.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-broadband/dongles-and-mobile-wi-fi/vodafone-k5160-dongle/inde... - you'll see:

Pay as you go Buy the K5160 4G data dongle for £20, and get 6GB data included – plus you can add a Pay as you go data pack of your choice. Ranging from 250MB to 15GB, and valid for 90 days, you can also use your UK data in our Pay as you go Europe Zone [PDF: 677KB]

So your £20 buys the device outright, and also a data pack 6GB.

Update 9 Sep 2018: This is now out-of-date. The total cost is now £45 - £20 for the dongle + £25 for 15GB data - but the link to buy it on PAYG just results in a "nothing in your basket" message. Anyone wanting to buy would do well to use the link in the first post on this thread, though the near impossibility of finding the information you need suggests that perhaps Vodafone is withdrawing from PAYG MBB.

Further thought: You posted in PAYG, so I assumed it was PAYG you were interested in!

If you look at the product page, there's also a link to all the Pay Monthly options. For those there's an upfront charge for the most basic, or the 1-month rolling plans, so I guess it's outright purchase of the device, plus some set-up costs. As far as I can see, you aren't actually purchasing any data, but I'm not entirely sure about how the Pay Monthly contracts work.

Many thanks Tony

Many thanks, ToniCa for your informative reply.

I've tried to unmark my original reply as the Answer, as I'm not sure that the dongle can be purchased on PAYG any longer. I can't find any means of purchasing other than using the original link in this thread, ie kidnapping someone else's basket, so have edited my "solution" with the current information.

Assuming that Vodafone is no longer selling dongles for PAYG MBB, perhaps a Moderator could unmark my original response.
