My contract ended in July, however vodaphone is still taking £46 every month for just the sim

Contracts don't ever end unless you request a cancellation. If you cancel a contract you lose the number unless you move it to PAYG or another network.

After the initial two year period they turn into 30 day rolling contracts at the same price. If you want to keep the phone you need to 'upgrade' to a sim only contract at a lower price.
