Default on credit report. HELP!

Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me  I recently tried to apply for a mortgage and was declined and from looking at my credit report I have a default with Vodaphone from 2014. I was unaware of this default at this time until Lowell contacted me informing me that the account has been passed on by Vodaphone. I contacted Vodaphone as this time as I had not received any written confirmation that this account was defaulted and was unaware until Lowell contacted me.
I was reassured by Vodaphone that this default would be lifted as there was miscommunication however, I have only recently discovered that has not been the case and my account still remains defaulted on my Experian credit file.

I have contacted Lowell as I am aware they are the current owners of this account however, they have clearly stated that as Vodaphone were the original defaulters then they can not drop this default unless Vodaphone correct this and inform that of these changes.

I feel this is massively affecting my life again as I am unable to apply for a mortgage or any credit for that matter with this default hanging over my head

I have had this exact problem, receiving debt management letters from a third party pertaining to a dongle I allegedly had - which I didn't. I had been a Pay Monthly customer but had decided not to renew my contract, even after been offered incentives to stay by rententions department. After receiving a number of these letters, I made a phone call and was told about this dongle which i said i  never had, and that was the end of the letters. However, when applying recently for a personal loan I was refused - lo and behold there is a Vodafone black mark on my credit report! Help please?
