Default stopping mortgage application - please help

2: Seeker

I am after advice for my husband. We got married October last year and now want to buy a house together. My credit is good but his shows as ‘very poor’ due to a £134 settled default from Dec 2014. I will be open and say there were reasons why which are a bit personal to be posting on a forum so can anyone direct me to an email address that I can explain better, or he can? It is stopping us getting a joint mortgage so we need to try and find out if we have any options once given the opportunity to explain. Please someone help xxx

Hi @Scousebird77

I know from personal experience how damaging a default can be.

If the default was warranted which it sounds like it was then it will remain on his Credit File for 6 years.

As its paid off then the settled marker would look better than an outstanding marker.

Vodafone wouldnt remove the default.

There might be mortgage lenders who would still help.

Thanks for replying

So there isn’t even any point him speaking to anyone even though he can prove the personal circumstances around that period?

Feel like crying that £134 settles default from 3 years ago can have such a damaging effect

Thanks again for messaging x

Hi @Scousebird77 there is no harm in asking but as @BandOfBrothers has mentioned if it is a true default then there is probably nothing that can be done. One of the team here will catch up with your thread and may offer some help.

Hey @Scousebird77

You are welcome.

I had to wait for 6 years to have mine removed whuch was not connected to a mobile phone contract.

I too had personal circumstances which led to this - but that said most others do too.

Vodafone have a duty of care to provide such info on a Credit File so that others conducting a search who are looking at passing an application are aware of whats happened in the past.

Vodafone would only update a Credit File to remove a default if it was added incorrectly.

Hi @Scousebird77

Your Husband needs to ask himself whether or not he owed the money.  If the answer is yes, then the default will be in place as a forewarning to his other creditors as to how he handles his finances.

However, it won't do any harm for him to post his concerns on the forum for one of the credit specialist to get back to him.  For data protection reasons, it has to be the account holder.

Good luck!

Have been trying to get vodafone to remove an incorrect default on my account for the past 2 years, they have completely mislead me and basically have caused me insane amount of anxiety and depression over the last 3 years!

I called in September 2016 to cancel my contract. They didnt and continued to keep the line active incurring in monthly charges I didnt know about, found out after a few months and tried to contact them to explain that the account should have been cancelled. Got transfered on to different deparmtents, hung up on, given numbers of debt collectors that my account was apparently with, on calling them they either didnt exist or had no clients called vodafone.

over a year passed with me trying to find someone who could locate my account and let me pay off any remaining debt. Then had an early termination fee randomly added to my account in November 2016.

Cut to November 2017 where I lost all hope of resolving myself and turned to the ombundesmon! Was completely mislead and informed if I paid in full (A debt which I didnt agree I owed!) That any adverse informaiton would be removed from my account, as I had been desperately trying ot get a mortage for the past 12 months, I reluctantly agreed to pay as long as this meant ANY and ALL adverse informaiton was removed.

Payment was made and now I am left with the adverse information still on my account, vodafone have only removed the adverse informaiton that was incurred due to the random early termination fee being added to my account, they have not removed any adverse information caused from the debt which I didnt incur and was phsyically unable to pay as vodafone was unable to locate my account or assist me in resolving.

Im now completely at a loss as ombundesmon feel they have resolved the issue, when they havnt. Vodafone dont care about fulfilling thier end of the bargain as they have recieved a payment in full.

So im sat left out of pocket, debt still showing on my credit file, no help from vodafone, no help from ombundesmon, unable to secure a mortage due to incorrect adverse informaiton on my account and an extra 10 years on my aging due to the stress and anxiety experienced over the last 3 years!

Honestly, anyone who manages to get any sort of possitive resoltion from vodafone should go and buy a lottery ticket, you are one lucky sod!

There is a Credit File Support Team who'll have access to the full history of the account and have the authority to make any adjustments that would be appropriate.   Hang on for the forum people to pick this up.  They'll be able to take your details privately and get this escalated.

There's a special place in hell for credit reference agencies, next to that other reserved space I hope.

It's crazy how something sometimes minor can affect decisions. Vodafone did a hard credit search on me for adding an apple watch plan, despite saying they hadn't. Hard searches affect your credit score, all for a £5 add-on with 30 day term, not a new plan for 12 months! You can't even discuss anything nowadays, it's all computer says no, and they refuse to give you any details.
