Defaulted Vodafone account on my credit file

Hi,

I have recently applied for a mortgage and to my surprise the application was declined. Reason - credit check fail. The thing is that I have never missed a payment on anything and so my financial adviser told me to get my credit report from experian and find out what is causing the issue. What I discovered is that Vodafone recorded a default on my account that I believed has been closed in November 2012 (the default is for huge £14). The contract has run out at that time and so I contacted Vodafone and told them to close the account and that I'll be moving my number to O2 and so I did. As far as I was concerned my Vodafone account was settled. Vodafone never contacted my about the £14. If they did I would have paid it. Even if the payment was to be one month late it would not damage my credit profile. Is it even legal to default my account without some sort of communication to let me know?

Straight after I got my credit report I called Vodafone and paid the £14 over the phone. (the account will soon show as settled but the default will stay) I asked them if I can get the default removed from my credit file and they couldn't tell me so they asked me to wait and that they will be in touch within 5 days. Yeah right... I called them again after 5 days and asked them to remove the default. I was told that it cannot be done because I did not pay my bill for 10 months. I was furious after the phone call. How can I pay for a bill that I dont know even existed?

I would really appriciate some help with this matter. I know that some people have been successful with getting the default removed.

Hi Everyone,

Great to see that Vodafone are helping people with this issue. I have exactly the same problem I have poor credit for a contract cancelled years ago based on guidance I was given by Vodafone!

My credit rating is awful as a result - if anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Em

@EmmaAspinall91 - We can look into this. I’ve sent you a private message with how to send us your details. Once we receive them, one of the credit specialists from my team will be in touch.

Hello,

Could you send me details how I can raise the same issue please.  I check my CR for the first time in years and discovered I have a £49 default from 3 years ago!

Of course I can @Davidw76 🙂

I've just sent you a private message with details on how to contact our specialist team. Once you've followed the instructions in my message, they'll be in touch to assist further.

Hello,

so I was called up yesterday, I paid my outstanding default but was advised that they couldn’t remove to mark.  Although I was very disappointed as I am trying to get a mortgage and for the sake of £49 it might prevent me from doing so.  I accept it was my fault though but an honest mistake.

Anyway, I’ve checked my Equifax report today and it’s marked satisfied but the default date as been changed to February 2018!!  It was previously 2013, surely you are not allowed to do this?  I now have a fresh default as apposed to one over 4 years old.  I am really upset by this and just wish I left it alone as I wasn’t even being chased for the debt.  I paid it in good faith!

@Davidw76 Rest assured, the default will still be from the original date. The default won't have been moved to February 2018, this will just be reflecting the date it's been satisfied.

If you do have any outstanding concerns related to this, you're more than welcome to reply to the latest email from our team.

The default as been changed to Feb 2018.  I have tried to screenshot my new report but it wouldn’t let me attach a screenshot.  I can email proof if I need to.

Dear Moderator,

I too have just discovered I have a default showing on my account for a contract dating back to 2014.  The default has been cleared and I believe was only shown in the first place because I cancelled my direct-debit when I terminated the contract, following the advise of a Customer Services rep, and subsequent debits were attempted after.

Please could you adivse/assist here - any help would be greatly appreciated as this is having a great impact on my credit score as I am trying to apply for a mortgage.

Thanking you in advance for your help,

James
