Tried to register but it says my number isn't a Vodafone number. I transferred my old number from TalkTalk. Should I use the temporary number?

The priority @Roddersuk is to get your online account set up and running, the App is linked to the online account.
If am sure your problem here is related to moving from Talk Mobile, Talk Mobile is part of Vodafone and the port may have failed due to this, to join from Talk Mobile, you would have needed to port out to any other network and port back into Vodafone.

I ported from TalkTalk not Talk Mobile and had no upgrade path which is why I switched to Vodafone. It doesn't fill me with confidence if Vodafone can't manage a simple thing like this. Why should I be expected to switch to a different provider and back again just because of Vodafone's incompetence.
The phone is connecting to the network fine and I can make and receive calls, its just My Vodafone that doesn't work properly.

I finally managed to track down the online chat facility (not easy to find) and it seems that Vodafone are experiencing a problem with their systems, its nothing to do with my account. I have to try again later (at some unspecified time)

I hope that's all it is. My app is certainly unable to show any account data at the moment (though it could earlier in the week).
