I've made an unlock request for an iPhone 8 and received an email back entitled "There's a problem with your unlock request". The body of the email says:
"Thanks for getting in touch about unlocking your device so you can use it on another network. This ca n take up to 10 working days as we may need to get in touch with the manufacturer, so please sit tight for now.
As soon as we’ve got the unlock code, we’ll email it to you along with instructions on what to do next."
Obviously I can't actually speak to Vodafone and ask if there was a problem with the request or ask if there is anything else they need 😖 so would appreciate any pointers on how to get this sorted out.

That email can be confusing, it basically means the unlocking has been requested from Apple and is in the process of being completed on Apple database.
Just keep trying an alternative SIM in the phone, when Apple have unlocked the phone on database this will complete the unlocking process. Alternatively, you can always synchronise to your itunes/Apple account to complete the unlocking.

Many thanks for the quick response! Just 2 questions:
* how long do Apple typically take to update their DB?
* does syncing the phone force the DB update (ie does it make things happen quicker?!)

Vodafone mention 10 working days but probably sooner on the unlocking page but you are dependent on when Apple get around to unlocking on database. Just keep trying an alternative SIM in the phone, when Apple have completed their part, this will complete the process.
It would also be worth looking around the unlocking forum, there are plenty of previous threads with helpful information.
