Signal boost fluctuates & is often inadequate

JohnCl8
4: Newbie

Without a Sure Signal I get 0-1 bars of the 5 bars on my Iphone 3GS

With the S-Sig I get 2-3 bars but it often falls off to 1 bar (or even no bars) leading to the call being inaudible or cutting.

The Sure Signal is in the attic of our bungalow and so I am effectively immediately below it only about 15' away (in a direct line).

Our Sure Signal is believed to be Version 1 as it has 4 lights           [Manufacturer SAGEM]

  1. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
  2. Alternatively, can the signal boosting be increased with this Sure Signal?
  3. Are there any other devices or software/apps that would do this?

Please take a look at our Sure Signal Troubleshooting thread. If this doesn’t resolve your query, please post your reply either below, or in the relevant thread, together with the details requested, including the following information.

Your speed test results from here.

Your ping test results from here.

Your external IP address from here.

The results of a traceroute.

Your Sure Signal serial number:

VSS Traceroute command

On a PC:

Click on Start and select Run

Type CMD into the Run box and press enter/click ok

A black box will appear.

In this box type tracert 212.183.133.177 press Enter

Paste the output of this command into your reply.

It's also worth trying your Sure Signal in another room to see if this improves the signal.

This will help us get the quickest possible resolution for you.

We did the S-Sig reset procedure and 1 hr later it was back online -but the signal was much stronger (back to 4-5 bars and clear call quality) -great!

However, during the course of a 1/2hr call there were 2 occasions when the reception dropped down to 1 bar and the call failed.

Should I now go through the steps of speedtesting etc. that you mentioned above?

You suggested that I try the Sure Signal in another room, but I thought that it had to be wired directly to the internet Router, which itself needs to be wired direct to the dual socket (internet and phone) that is in our attic.

If my understanding above is not correct, can I move the Sure Signal to plug it into a phone exension socket somewhere else in the house?

@JohnCl8

I have checked your Sure Signal and there appears to be no problem with the device itself.

The issue you are experiencing is usually down to there being a 3G service available in your area. If there is a 3G service the Sure Signal will transfer you to that service, even if this is a poor reception.

If you are using your phone for making calls it may be more beneficial to switch your phone to use a 2G service rather than a 3G service and only use 3G when accessing the internet through your phone.

You can check the level of coverage for  2G, 3G and 4G in your area with our online coverage checker.
