If your internal memory is etting full then clearing some of that out will help.
Perhaps using an online vault such as Dropbox.
Delete old unused apps and with the remaining ensure they are all updated.
Sometimes a soft reboot by holding a set series of button pressess that takes you to an Apple logo and then let go can help.
Backing up and Restore via itunes can help.
The phone puts recent apps into a suspended state which its usually good at but closing the apps down manually in the multi tasking tray can help.
An Apple Store Genius Bar can run a diagnostic on the device.

Having the battery replaced remedies Apple's slow down move. I think Apple are currently charging £25 to replace the battery.
