Android Update....Heads Up Notifications

My HTC One (M8) updated to the new system today, and I am now plagued with the new way of receiving notifications: "Heads Up Notifications"

Is there anyway to disable the Heads Up? I was quite happy with the little icons appearing in the bar at the top of the phone...now I also have the details of the messages appearing! the last straw was a message for my bank telling my I had changed my password!! I don't want these details on the screen...I want the old notifications back.

If there is no way to disable it...how can I go back to the previous operating system??

I think you can turn them off under sound and notification settings. There's an option right at the bottom of this menu for "when device is locked"
