FTTP installed no landline?

Hi

Just had FTTP installed today, they set it up but I forgot to ask them about the telephone.  I had looked at pictures online of a ONT and they had Tel1 rj45 sockets so I assumed ours would have but it doesn't.  I got out the vodafone router and used a rj45 cable to plug into Tel1 on it and into the phone (BT 090639 BT Advanced Phone) it seemed to initially work, I could see it phoned my mobile but I couldn't hear anything, but then after a while it just said check line cord or something on the screen.

I want to use my own AX router really, can I plug a phone (voip?) into my router?  With like a rj11 to ethernet cable or something?

Thanks

UK ONTs don't tend to have phone sockets on them, you'll find that on the ISP-provided router instead.  You may need to get an adapter or new cable to be able to plug an existing phone into the provided router.

*There are other posts on these boards about how to get your credentials if you decide to go with your own equipment!

I looked in the vodafone router box and there was a rj11 to rj11 cable that was labelled "internet" but used that to connect to Tel1 (also tried Tel2) and then connected other end to base station of phone.  It's a digital phone but not voip.  I'm sure it was working because when I rang my mobile it showed it counting up like the call was connected, unfortunately my mobile was upstairs so couldn't hear if it rang, but there was no sound on the phone.  Then when I tried it again it kept saying line error or something on the phone and didn't work any more.  I think the router disconnected because it was updating as it hadn't been used for a long time but then when the internet came back on the phone didn't work.

If I get the credentials do I just need a voip phone and then plug that into router via ethernet?

Edit: just worked out I will need a voip adapter/gateway if I want to use my current phone, then I put the credentials into that?

If there's 4 pins on each end of the rj11 "modem" cable it'll work. If it's not working then there's a fault on your service that you need to raise with vodafone.

If the phone isn't working with the vf router there's no point trying a third party router and ata until the service is fixed.

I tried the old router cable too now (a thicker rj11 to rj11), that didn't work either.  Are you sure a DECT phone can work plugged into the back of the vodafone hub?  Wouldn't it have to be a VOIP phone?

I have ordered a Grandstream HT812 anyway, so will need to set that up and get my credentials from vodafone when it comes.

Absolutely, in fact I consider it the best way to do it. The base station is connected to the router and the other phone sets can be where you want them without extra wiring.

The connection from the base station to the router is still a normal BT type connection, the router contains the ATA. (Analog telephone adapter) It is only the connection from the base station to the phones that is DECT.

Did you not get a "VoIP adapter" with your router? (it's nothing of the sort, it's just a BT to RJ11 adapter)

Sometimes a direct cable wont work because the pin-out on the base station is not standard, but by using the cable that came connected to the base station, and the adapter you can be sure it is connected correctly,

Thanks for the confirmation.  I couldn't see one in the box but have ordered one and will have a look around tomorrow, might be one in the loft.  Just want to check the phone works with the vodafone hub before I mess about with the Grandstream and my own router!

Ah yes, you didn't originally didn't start on digital voice, so no they won't have supplied a "VoIP adapter".

Other posts on here have said they are sending them out for free, if you are having problems connecting the phone.

I got my grandstream today plugged it in, found a cable in the drawer and I heard a dial tone on phone, but didn't work as I hadn't put any settings in yet. Was going to try it out tonight but now internet has gone down just because I tried to change the routers DNS server settings.
