Landline phone with own router on FTTP

bruce_miranda

Just got FTTP and everything is working fine off the VF router. Phone lines are plugged into the VF router, VF router's WiFi is switched off. 3rd party Mesh has been switched to Bridge mode and plugged into the VF's ethernet port.

However I am shocked at how feature poor the VF router is. e.g. There are no Parental controls at all. I know I can get rid of the VF router and plug my own Mesh router into the Openreach ONT, but what about the Landline.

Are there any 3rd party routers in the market that have a telephone socket at the back to allow the home phone to be plugged in?

So I guess my question is can I use one of the proxy servers mentioned? Or is it specific to me?

Vodafone gave me one that didn't work! 091.Z4

I've just got the following to register and receive an incoming call:
09a.Z1.bbvoice.vodafone.co.uk
09a.Z2.bbvoice.vodafone.co.uk
09a.Z3.bbvoice.vodafone.co.uk

09a.Z4.bbvoice.vodafone.co.uk

However. none of these below would work for me

10a.Z4.bbvoice.vodafone.co.uk

xbn.Z2.bbvoice.vodafone.co.uk

1733.10.bbvoice.vodafone.co.uk

All came back as "does not exist"

So, they might be specific or as very few people have actually got this working, it could be because Vodafone are giving out duff information. They certainly did with me the first time I asked.... second time they gave me a working proxy.

One other thing.... These only seem to be able to be looked up if you are using Vodafone's DNS servers 90.255.255.255 & 90.255.255.90.

I just tried using them on a Zen FTTC connection and it failed to look them up When I change to Voda's DNS, they can be found. However, when you try to connect to register they ignore the request.

So when you're setting up you router/ATA you might need to either set the router to Voda's DNS or inside the ATA set it to use 90.255.255.255 & 90.255.255.90.

Ok will take all this onboard before attempting to get it going.

Thanks

@chimpzilla1979 could the outgoing call fail be due to the wrong DTMF style or do you not get a dial tone?

Interesting point re the dns servers.

I was also given xbn.Z2.bbvoice.vodafone.co.uk as the proxy so I'll have to try the four you suggest (could xbn even be some kind of indicator on their sytem for "insert the relevant info here") , could be exchange b********  number.

I actually got my voip details over the TOBI chat, so I guess getting the details is down to the agent you chat to. At first I was only given uid, password and server - I had to press for the rest.

Busy day tomorrow 👍

My agent wouldn't budge at all but you have given this information out to others didn't cut any ice. He then offered to put a complaint in.

The following day was very surprised to get a call from Vodafone and he immediately gave me all logins and servers including my broadband details (which I already had) stating I would be on my own if I had any problems and stated it is policy not to give out the information freely but if requested either by complaint or if possible being put through to a supervisor they will happily give it out with the disclaimer of faults can only be reported if using Vodafone's equipment (fair enough)

Unfortunately for me I currently have an active ticket for incredibly slow speeds every evening on 900/900 cityfibre gigafast (sometimes as low as 50mb download speed) so cannot swop everything out to try.

Have you tried your own router yet? There's been a few threads lately about low speeds that have been resolved with a third party router. As your speed issues are in the evening (as mine were initially) have you tried alternative dns servers?

Thinking about it the agent did read out a disclaimer after they gave me the details that I agreed to. I agreed to it without thinking because I just want to get away from the Vodafone hardware.

I don't need the landline, would just be interesting to get it working.

Out of interest does your upload speed go down the pan in the evenings or just the download?

Outgoing calls were fine, it was incoming that was the issue with Android clients>Asterisk. Nothing to do with Voda, just my config of the Asterisk/Android setup. I suspect the Android clients for anybody going down that route.
With a proper SIP/Voip phone or ATA then it was all good.
I'm actually ditching the Asterisk setup as it's a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut. It would have been useful to be able to answer landline calls on an Android phone as well as a POTS phone, but it's not worth anymore faff or the extra box running the Asterisk server. It's at my mum's house, she just needs it to work as it did before.
I've bought a Grandstream HT801 ATA and I'm going to give it a try on site today hopefully.

Only my download speed upload is still 900+

I initially set up the config using Android apps before switching to the Grandstream devices once the config was finalised. Having tested again I confirm there are no issues here using Mizudroid (with default settings) using the provided config (also without direct_media=no). Is your local subnet covered by the 'permit' and 'local_net' in the config? Secondly, did you try calling locally between clients to see if the same issue occurs? I suspect the issue may be on the Draytek side.
